This is the Dutch oven apple pie, a perfect balance of light, flaky crust, juicy apples, and sugary cinnamon spice everyone at the campsite will go wild for.

[00:00:23.02] Text: Ingredients: Store-bought pie dough. ½ cup sugar, ½ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 3 large apples, Powdered sugar. You can also substitute homemade or gluten-free dough.

[00:00:26.48] If you're new to Dutch ovens, this is what it looks like. It's a heavy cooking pot with a tight lid and thick walls to help retain heat and moisture for even heat distribution. Some have legs on the bottom designed for outdoor cooking, but since this one is flat, we're going to use a trivet, which is a small stand or plate used to protect against the heat. [00:00:48.15] Let's get our fire going. Start by building a mound of charcoal in the middle, add some lighter fluid or use a cold chimney, and light them up. Once the mound of coals is hot enough, it should look ashen or gray. We're using the ring method to cook our dish, so that means we want to create a ring of hot coals at the bottom and use metal tongs or a shovel to arrange them in a circle large enough for the trivet to fit on, or a Dutch oven with legs. Once we start cooking, we're going to cover the top with hot coals for equal heat. This will ensure a well-balanced heat and hopefully keep us from burning anything. And remember, when it comes to any fire safety first, never leave it unsupervised and always have a water source nearby.

[00:01:23.40] While those coals are heating up, let's prep our apples. The recipe typically calls for about three apples, so we're going to cut these into thin slices and add them to a bowl.

While our apples and oven cool, sprinkle a little flour on the cutting board like so. Let's do our dough. Store-bought is just fine, but you can also make it at home the night before.
[00:02:06.40] Or you can make it right at the campsite. Store-bought pie dough typically doesn't need a rise, but it should be at room temp. Our dough is already rolled out, but if you made yours at camp, roll it flat using a rolling pin or water bottle. Start cutting your dough into strips like this and set them aside.

[00:02:21.00] Before the next step, make sure your oven is cooled off. Once it's OK to touch, add parchment paper to the bottom to make sure it's easier to take the pie out.
[00:02:28.62] Now we want to spiral the dough strips into our oven. We're creating a base for our pie, so make sure the strips fold into the bottom and up the sides like so. This will give our pie some structure and leave room for our apple slices. Plus it's going to look amazing.

[00:02:42.60] Place the cooked apple slices between the folds of the dough like I'm doing here. To keep the dough from sticking, you can put a slice or two in between each of the layers to separate the dough, and then fill in with the rest of the apple slices.

[00:02:54.13] Now, pour all of those wonderful juices from the apple bowl over the dough equally safely.
[00:02:59.89] Place the oven back on the trivet using a metal shovel or tongs. Add hot coals to the top until it's covered. We're going to let this cook for about 20 to 25 minutes. Don't be afraid to peak.

[00:03:09.22] The temp we're aiming for here is roughly 350 degrees Fahrenheit. We recommend rotating your oven and lid about halfway through to ensure the heat is distributed evenly, and avoid hot spots or burning.

[00:03:18.71] Also, keep in mind that cooking on a fire can be unpredictable and it may be affected by wind, air temp, or even the type of coal you use. So if it looks or smells like it's cooking faster than estimated, it probably is. Adjust the time on the fire accordingly to avoid overcooking.
[00:03:32.66] Once it's ready, carefully remove your Dutch oven from the fire, remove the pie, and sprinkle powdered sugar all over the top.
