DUTCH OVEN APPLE PIE

Cook Time: Approx. 20-25 Min. | Serves 4-6

When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a freshly-baked pie - especially when you're camping. Cooked perfectly over the fire in a Dutch oven with warm, flaky crust, cinnamon-spiced apples, and a powdered sugar top, this dish is one of the sweetest ways to end (or start) your day outside.

INGREDIENTS

Store-bought pie dough (You can also substitute homemade/gluten-free dough)

½ cup sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp salt

3 large apples

Rolling pin or water bottle to roll dough

Powdered sugar

Dutch Oven with legs (or trivet)

Oven mitts

Metal tongs or shovel for hot coals

Mixing bowl

Sharp knife

Parchment paper

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Get the campfire ready by creating a hot ring of coals for your trivet to sit on.

2. Remove the core from 3 large apples and slice.

3. Cook the sliced apples in Dutch oven with a ½ cup of sugar, ½ tsp of salt, and 1 tsp of cinnamon for about 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves.

4. Transfer cooked apples and juices to a bowl and let cool.

5. Roll out store-bought pie dough and cut into 1-inch strips.

6. When oven is cool, add parchment paper to bottom.

7. Start spiraling the dough strips inside to form base.

8. Place the cooked apple slices between the folds of dough.

9. Pour juice from cooked apples over the dough and put lid on.

10. Place Dutch oven on trivet over hot coals.

11. Add charcoal or embers to the lid.

12. Cook for about 20-25 min (we're aiming for 350 F).

13. Once it's cooked, remove from fire and sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

Camp Cooking Tips & Tricks

Add an Insert

Prevent food from sticking by adding a metal insert or parchment paper to the bottom of your Dutch oven.

B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Dough)

Don’t like store-bought? Want to use a different dough? Make it the night before or bring the ingredients and make it right at camp. Just be sure to follow any additional instructions.

Use Different Apples

Instead of using one kind, use a variety of apples to play with the flavors and textures of your filling. For instance, mixing fuji and honey crisp apples with a granny smith will give your pie a sweet/tart combo that tastes perfectly balanced – and delicious.
