Used to wear this type of mitt years ago for ice fishing, then they became difficult to find. LL Bean sent me a great mitt, along with a few good old memories from my youth. How can you beat that?

I am not happy! When you say its really warm and then use it on a 30 degree day and your fingers are cool....Not good.
I like everyone else read the glowing reviews here...Maybe its just me but I thought it should be hot at 30 and warm at 0.

I got this item because I was going on a x country ski trip and I know that wool mittens are the best way to keep the whole hand warm. Also the leather prevents chill factor as NO wind gets through. Excellent buy.

My husband hands are really curled into his palm, but his hands do get cold and he likes to do some yard work. His fingers just don't fit into the fingers on a glove so we looked for some leather mittens. These leather mittens are perfect for his hands. The leather is so soft it gives him an easy grasp on things and he has the inserts for cold mornings when he walks. Nothing else we found worked as well as these. They are almost too nice to do the things he wants to do, but sure have solved the problem for him. These are a great pair of leather mittens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Espi1 Warm, practical mittens
Even though we've been experiencing a milder than average winter here in Massachusetts, I'm glad I bought these mittens. There will be cold weather to come--next year if not this. The leather blocks the wind, and the woolen inserts keep in warmth. Cosy!

My wife gave me these mittens for Christmas because she was tired of my complaints of cold hands. They are really warm and the leather outers are very durable. Unfortunately the woven inner mittens pilled up after the first time that I wore them, and shortly thereafter, a hole developed. The outer mittens have shown no wear whatsoever. I returned the mittens with the pre addressed and postage paid label with, of course, no questions asked. I still love these mittens, and if the inner mitten wears again, I will buy some knit mittens to go in them. I felt bad to have returned them. I wish selecting a nickname was as easy as the return process.

I bought these mittens a year or two ago. They've been fine. Maybe a little better than really good gloves. I wasn't amazed or disappointed. They did what they're supposed to do.
But then I used them skiing last weekend. Base temps were -5 to 0. I'm told that the wind chill up the mountain was -50 to -30 (I don't know how accurate that is, but it was cold and windy, windy enough at times to stop us while going downhill). I do know that I came home with frostbite on my face.
While wearing the mittens, my hands were quite comfortable. I had hand warmers with me, but I had no reason to open them up and slip them in my mittens.
At one point I had to take the mittens off to adjust zippers. In less than 30 seconds my hands were in PAIN. I actually wondered if my thumb got frostbite that quickly. I immediately put the mittens back on and kept my thumb in with the other fingers. (15 minutes later it was fine.)
People I met on the chair lifts with big, expensive ski gloves said their hands were cold and that I was better off with the mittens.
These mittens were FANTASTIC!!!! You wouldn't expect such great warmth from two thin layers, but they were unbelievable. I brought "real ski gloves" with me just in case these didn't perform well enough, but I just lent those out to someone else. I didn't need them!
I give these mittens 6 stars.

Rated 3 out of 5 by STP1 Used to be great, but lower quality now
Disappointed with the quality of these formerly great chopper mitts.
I purchased a couple pair in 2015. They were fine: warm, tough, crude but good quality material and construction. My family uses them for everything from chopping to snowblowing to cold weather walks.
Purchased two more pair in 2016, and the quality was terrible, much worse than the 2015 version. The leather was thin with flaws and weak spots, the stitching was way too close to the ends of the leather, etc. They clearly wouldn't have held up with normal use, so had to return them. Very disappointing for such an expensive item.
Obviously I cannot recommend the current version of these mitts. I hope LLBean will choose to bring the quality standards up next winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Batcats 1 hour walk in 7 degree weather - no problem
I wanted to test these mittens out so I went for a 1 hour walk in 7 degree weather and had no problem with cold hands. The mittens are windproof too.

Excellent for when I use my snowblower. Well made and have a reinforced area at the thumb/palm area.
