We make pieces that last, and if they don't, we want to know about it. L.L. himself always said that he "didn't consider a sale complete until goods are worn out and the customer still satisfied." Our guarantee is a handshake – a promise that we'll be fair to each other. So if something's not working or fitting or standing up to its task or lasting as long as you think it should, we'll take it back. We want to make sure we keep our guarantee the way it's always been for over a century.
To help protect our customers and make sure every return or exchange is dealt with fairly, we may either require a receipt or decline a return or exchange in certain situations, including:
- Items that were not purchased directly from L.L.Bean (such as items purchased at thrift stores, online sellers or garage sales)
- Items with a missing label or an item that has been defaced
- On rare occasions, based on the nature of prior transactions
- Returns without a receipt and a valid ID in our stores
- Items that have been soiled or contaminated, until they have been cleaned
- Items lost or damaged due to fire, flood or natural disaster
- Returns on ammunition either in our stores or through the mail
Unfortunately, it's a reality. Most of the time, it involves attempted returns of pieces purchased elsewhere – at flea markets, yard sales or online. That's not part of the deal. If you're donating to charity, you can help us by marking each item's label with an X. That way, we can tell when the item has not been purchased directly from us. And we can keep our guarantee exactly as it has been for over a century.

1. Locate the Packing Slip
Find and complete the form printed on the packing slip that came with your order.
If you discover a problem after you've accepted delivery of an item shipped by freight, contact us. We may be able to resolve the problem without requiring you to return the item. Please retain all packaging material until you're completely satisfied with the condition of your purchase. Doing so will make it easier to return the item if necessary. We will arrange with a freight company to complete the return.
2. Prepare Your Package
Include your return item and receipt, invoice or packing slip, using the original package if possible.
Please let us know as much information as you can about your purchase so that we can locate a record of your purchase. If we can't, we'll reimburse you with an L.L.Bean Gift Card for the current selling price of the item or replace your item. To help ensure fairness to all customers, we do require a receipt in certain situations. See our Special Conditions for details.
3. Attach Shipping Label
Use the UPS Convenience Label on your packing slip. Return shipping is $6.50 per package.
Can't find your shipping label?
If you choose not to use our convenience label, you will be responsible for paying all return shipping costs up front.

4. Ship Your Package
Take your package to a UPS drop box, store or driver. Find a UPS location.
Allow up to two weeks to receive your refund from the time we receive your package. In most cases, we will refund the original payment method. Gift recipients will receive merchandise credit.

1. Find Your Item and Receipt (if available)
Please bring any receipts along with your items so we can refund your original method of payment, provide a merchandise credit or exchange your products.

2. Visit Any L.L.Bean Store
Whether you purchased your item on llbean.com, by mail, by phone or at one of our stores, we are happy to accept your return at any of our retail stores or outlets. Due to space constraints, our kiosks can process returns only for items purchased at those locations.
