L.L.Bean Hiring for Seasonal Positions
Warm L.L.Bean slippers, flannel sleepwear and fleece are part of many families’ holiday celebrations and gift-giving traditions, and behind the scenes, thousands of L.L.Bean employees work to ensure our most beloved cozy items arrive on our customers’ doorstep. Just take our slippers for instance: on average, we sell one pair of Wicked Good Slippers every seven seconds each December, and it takes many L.L.Bean warehouse partners to get those gifts packed and delivered with care.
For years, our warehouse operation has been a beacon for locals looking to increase seasonal income, and we enjoy welcoming our holiday employees to the L.L.Bean community during this special time of year. In addition to flexible hours, competitive pay and helping make someone’s holiday a little bit brighter, L.L.Bean’s seasonal positions come with the perk of discounts on select merchandise.
This year, the L.L.Bean warehouse has been reformatted to ensure social distancing and heightened safety measures are in place, but the crucial task remains the same. In the month of December alone, we ship an average of 325,000 items every day. Warehouse pickers – dubbed “professional shoppers” by their peers – can walk well over three miles per day pulling items to fulfill customer orders.
“It’s a lot of work, but we make it fun,” says Jack Samson, Vice President of Fulfillment Manufacturing and Logistics. “During December we have themed days – things like Flannel Friday, Bean Boot Tuesday and M&M Monday – to engage our employees and keep spirits high during our busiest time of year.”
So what does a typical holiday season look like at L.L.Bean?
Holidays at L.L.Bean By The Numbers
• 1.2 Million – the square footage of the warehouse
• 325,000 – items packed and shipped per day
• 25,000 – items monogrammed between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year
• 31 – miles of shelving
• 6 – feet of distance between shift employees (new this year)
With safety as our top priority, L.L.Bean has reduced shift size to 50% capacity while adding an additional shift to ensure the timely fulfillment of orders. We have indicated one-way paths to ensure safe distancing can be adhered to, and we provide protective face coverings for all employees during their shifts.
This year, we are also asking customers to shop early to ensure that we and our shipping partners can deliver ahead of the holiday rush, and in order to fulfill an earlier holiday shopping season, hiring for all openings is now underway.
