How should hiking boots and shoes fit when trying them on?

They should feel secure at the heel with about 1/2 inch of space in front of your longest toe. Try them on with the socks you plan to hike in and walk around to check for any pressure points.

Should I choose hiking boots or hiking shoes?

Choose hiking boots if you prefer a higher-top style that covers more of your ankle, and choose hiking shoes if you want a lower profile. The best choice is the one that matches the coverage and feel you like for hiking.

How can I get a snug fit without tight spots in hiking footwear?

Start with a secure heel and then adjust the laces to fine-tune the fit across the top of your foot. A snug fit should feel even, without pinching at the forefoot or pressing on the top of the foot.

Where can I find what hiking boots and shoes are made of?

Material details are listed on each product page in the item details, specs, or construction information. Look for notes on the upper, lining, and outsole so you know what you are buying.

How should I care for hiking boots and shoes after a hike?

Clean off dirt with a soft brush, loosen the laces, and let them air-dry at room temperature. Remove insoles to help everything dry fully, and avoid placing footwear next to direct heat.

Finding the right hiking boots and shoes starts with how you like to hike and how you want your footwear to fit. Shop higher-top hiking boots and low hiking shoes in a mix of lace-up and slip-on styles.

If you are choosing between boots and shoes, focus on coverage and feel. A higher top gives more around-the-ankle coverage, while a lower profile feels closer to a sneaker. For any style, look for a secure heel and about 1/2 inch of space in front of your longest toe, and check if the style is offered in multiple widths. If you wear insoles or orthotics, bring them along when you try footwear on so the fit feels right from the start.

After each hike, brush off dirt, loosen the laces, and let footwear air-dry at room temperature. Removing insoles and drying everything fully before storing helps maintain fit and shape. When it is time to replace laces, keep an extra pair on hand so you can keep your hikers ready to go.
