I purchased this in 2003 or 2004 and couldn't be happier with it. I purchased the dark mission and have three different covers; blue denim, olive suede-looking and my favorite is the tapestry. It is still going strong after 10 years of use and I finally decided to write a review. I love L.L. Bean products and customer service is the best. I am a long time customer of over 30 years.

I just received my LL Bean Mission Futon late yesterday. The shipments arrived faster than expected. Upon opening the boxes this morning, I found that the seat deck and the back deck showed signs of splits and cracks around the corners. Those deep and long splits looked more like they were chopped by an ax. These defective parts will probably be returned to LL Bean for an exchange.

This futon frame took about 20 minutes to setup. My husband was pretty surprised by the price but later lamented given the quality, construction and finish of the wood.
Is extremely comfortable and is a good size to fit two people comfortably for an overnight stay.

Looking at just the frame, this would be a strong 4-star review. Only issue I've had with the frame is where a nick occurs, I find it very difficult for the wood to take stain (I tried using one of those stain markers). Otherwise, frame is solid and classically styled.
For the mattress, let me say initially that I use this futon as an everyday sleeper. If the futon is used only periodically, the following might not be an issue. So, after 6 months of use, I've had to replace this mattress because it really did not hold its loft, become lumpy and uneven, and finally unbearable. A definite '1-star' only because at least the seams didn't come apart haha.
There you go. Make of it what you will.

This is an excellent product. It has a great solid feel to it and seems incredibly durable. It took my wife and I about 1 hour total from the first package being opened to having the whole area cleaned up. We love how the mission finish looks.

This futon is a mighty beast. It's heavy and durable. We had ours for over 15 years in a household with 5 children. We got a different mattress because the original was NOT comfy. We've replaced the slipcovers about 3 times, mostly because I got tired of looking at them. My 11 and 15 yr old boys were putting the futon into bed position the other night to sleep with the new puppy in the sunroom and the piece of wood at the bottom of the backrest part splintered apart where the long screw was located. They were horrified when they heard the crack. Structural weakness or user error? I ordered the cottage futon and primrose floral cover to replace it. We got our money's worth after 15 years :D

Rated 1 out of 5 The Frame Broke in Half
I loved the way the mission futon looked, and was looking forward to using it in my guest bedroom.
Unfortunately, it has been a complete disaster due to the very poor quality of construction.
As you can see in the accompanying photo, the end of the futon completely broke off with all of the slats separating and coming out.
The first time this happened I disassembled it and hot-glued it back together where it broke apart. It held for a short time then broke apart again as you can see in the photograph.
This shouldn't even happen with heavy use, but the futon has been rarely used, making it even more surprising.
I'm very disappointed that LLBean would sell a product of such poor quality, given their reputation for quality.

This futon is exactly what we were looking for. It was delivered quickly and was assembles within an hour. It is extremely comfortable and looks great!
We would recommend this futon to anyone looking for a nice piece of furniture that needs to be functional for a small space. Great buy!

Just assembled it. Much heavier, sturdier and more solid than our previous generic brand fouton. Mattress is thick. The dark mission is a beautiful color. The directions were OK except the photocopied photos were difficult to see. Husband and I are happy with our purchase. Hope the houseguests like it too.
