The jacket probably performs well under water but it's too noisy, shiny, and expensive... it's also shapeless (boxy). It doesn't even have a double zipper. I found another one with the competitors at about the same price and it looks much nicer and doesn't make the dreaded noise.

Rated 5 out of 5áby smalltownprofessional .....a keeper
I read the reviews and must admit I was concerned about the two way zipper complaints and comments about the velcro versus snaps, noisy fabric, boxy cut etc,.....
I ordered it in black, then saw it on sale in the stainless steel (light grey) and thought that the light color might be better for my planned trip to Florida. It never occurred to me that I might be tempted to keep both when I ordered the light grey. But the cut is flattering, and will allow a heavy sweater for cooler weather. It packs into it's own little pocket pouch. As a deal-breaker, I packed the black up in the pouch just to see how it would look when I unfurled it from its scrunchball....it was a little wrinkled at first but not bad. A perfect traveler that will span seasons with its layering capacity, hood, and waterproof goretex.

This is a bit large on me. I always order x-large, but this is very large on me. When I walk this keeps me dry.
I could wear two large sweaters under this. Will be ordering the size large in the stowaway gortex jacket. Hopefully it won't be so big.
This is made well. A bit overpriced though.

Where's the old Stowaway with the wonderful 2 way zipper and fabulous deep pockets inside and out? You can't stash water bottles and snacks in this version. Looks like LL Bean is removing quality design we used to count on.

This is a great raincoat for walking my dog, but a two way zipper would be helpful for sitting comfort. (Rainy day football games)

Rated 2 out of 5áby StillGettingWet Very Disappointed
I bought this jacket despite the fact that it doesn't have a two-way zipper. Big mistake. And, after wearing it a few times, I finally gave in and decided to take it back. I just couldn't deal with having to unzip it to get into the car while standing in the pouring rain. Also, not being able to unzip it at the bottom to give a little more flexibility while walking, was irritating - particularly since the jacket was oddly narrow. I'm not a particularly big person and i felt very constricted in the medium (I often wear a small in jackets). I'm sorry because i loved the yellow color, the length of the jacket and how waterproof it is. This was meant to be my rainy-day dog-walking jacket, and I'm back to wearing an old short jacket (but with a two-way zipper) from Beans from many years ago. Please please put a two-way zipper in this jacket and i will definitely buy it!!

Rated 5 out of 5áby OutdoorsAllDay Windproof, Nice Length, Attractive
I was really looking for a longish and lightweight windbreaker more than a raincoat - and this coat is perfect. Because of its length (comes to just above my knee in medium - I'm 5'6"), its completely windproof fabric, and the light lining, this coat fulfills my wishes perfectly. I wasn't looking for fashion, but it's a nice-looking coat. I haven't had the problems other reviewers have mentioned, i.e., the need for a two-way zipper. I've driven in the coat, and ridden a bike - with no problem. The sleeves are roomy and plenty long enough, and the hood fits very nicely. I got the Bright Royal Blue - and like it very much - it's dark blue with a hint of purple. The coat is roomy enough to wear over a fleece jacket, so I've worn it for walks at 40░ and been comfortable.

Great Coat-I especially love that the hood now folders up in the collar. Much less bulky than the old stowaway I had from many years ago.

Rated 2 out of 5áby OlyD Zipper is downfall
I purchased this to replace a Stowaway from some years ago. I read the reviews and thought I could live with a one way zipper on this long coat ... But I was wrong. It's quite uncomfortable to have it zipped while sitting. Which means riding in the car or watching wet sporting events. So regretfully I'll be sending it back. I hope that they'll put the two way zipper back, as had been in previous versions of this coat. Otherwise it seems like a fine coat, though it'd be nice to have another inside pocket.

Rated 3 out of 5áby ElisNYC Almost great jacket, strange fit, 1-way zipper!?
I really, really wanted to own this jacket. I ordered it in 2 colors & thought I might keep both. There are some very good features but overall I?m disappointed for the first time by an LL Bean product. I read through the comments before ordering but other than the zipper being one-way I was surprised by the fit of the jacket.
I wanted a durable, really waterproof, longer rain coat with enough room for a mid-weight layer like a light fleece or thin sweater without being tight at the shoulders or arms, & designed for a woman - not a big boxy slicker. I live in NYC & wanted something practical for the weather & taking the subways or riding a bike but neat enough to wear to work in really bad weather. This jacket description sounded like this was perfect but I had problems with the fit (it might just be me) & finish, like the zipper & velcro closure. I also ordered the Trail Model Raincoat in Black & like it very much at less than half the price though it?s a lighter weight jacket than I had originally wanted - I can actually wear a mid-weight layer under it.
I ordered Stowaway in XL for ease, normally I?m a L in LL Bean shirts but XL in outerwear to be able to layer & to hang on in the subway. I am 5?7 and about 160-165 lbs. & proportional, not very busty. I?m generally athletic, not a swimmer or a weightlifter but I don?t have narrow or sloped shoulders, just normal not-skinny shoulders. I own 6-8 LL Bean jackets, parkas, rain jackets, I?ve never had this issue before.
If you are slim in the shoulders & neck & arms, you may love this jacket. Except for the zipper, my problem is the fit in the upper body & neck. I could live with the Velcro instead of snaps if it were a 2-way zip, and live with the not-generous hood if it fit as well as the Trail Model jacket, but altogether it just doesn?t work. Even if this jacket went on sale I wouldn?t buy it for me.
The fabric does make a little bit of noise but it?s Goretex and it will get quieter as you wear it. The fabric is great - light weight but strong, and the colors are excellent - I ordered an Alpine Gold & a Black (really black). The collar is lined in a nice soft fabric but it?s kind of an grungy grey, I wish it matched the coat or were lighter or darker - something. The mesh lining is very good & I can see it would be comfortable to wear even in mild weather over a short sleeved shirt.
The sleeves are a very nice length but slimmer than I expected in outerwear, especially at the bottom - with a light fleece they fit a little too closely for my taste, by 3/4 of an inch or so.
From the waist down it?s sized well & is flattering, a nice trim lines but not at all tight; the pockets are in the perfect place, a good size, well made, & have good zippers.
Wearing a med. wt. Bean striped boatneck shirt this jacket feels very fitted at the shoulders up into the collar & when the hood is folded into the collar the collar is uncomfortably stiff & snug - if the collar weren?t so snug I wouldn?t think the stiffness was a problem, it would just stand up like a ski jacket collar. If you look at the pic showing the detail of the back of the collar you can see the shoulders are raglan set & the collar slopes in at the top. I think they should have eased the collars/shoulder to adjust for the stiffness & bulk of the collar with the hood folded into it. The collar is also just a little small / close to the neck even when the hood isn?t folded in it - barely enough room for a silk scarf even if it?s only zipped to the bottom of the collar. It?s a matter of the shape of the shoulders & collar as much as the actual size - with a t shirt it fits ok but it still feels like the neck is riding up & making the jacket pull under the arms. I like a stand up collar but this one doesn?t fit me well.
The jacket zipper - Not a 2-way zipper on an almost knee-length $200 jacket? The Trail Model rain jacket is the same length, half the price, and it has a great 2-way zipper & the same zippered pockets as Stowaway. The Stowaway hits just above my knees & the zipper starts below my fingertips, and the jacket isn?t tight but you really can?t sit without undoing the zipper unless you are very careful - getting into & out of a car everyday eventually something will rip. It also takes a little wiggling to get to your jeans pockets under the coat & if you want to ride a bike it would be tricky.
Velcro instead of snaps - Not good enough, especially as the zipper is only 1-way. The Velcro on this jacket is a series of slim vertical strips, designed just to keep the rain flap down over the zipper - it won?t keep the jacket closed for more than a minute, it needs snaps.
The hood - The hood is just an OK size but not generous, which some people might like, I like a little more hood. It doesn?t come all the way to the front under your chin, just drops straight down to the side of the collar. When it rains I often put my hair in a pony tail or tuck it into a bun and this hood just covers my hairline at the sides if my hair is in a ponytail & you need to keep the strings snug to keep it from sliding back a bit. Your face may get a bit wet.
Again, my main issue is with the sizing / fit, and secondarily, the 1-way zipper & ungenerous hood. This is a nice looking well made jacket, except for the choice of zipper it looks to be the usual excellently designed & made LL Bean product.
