As a passion, I have always studied severe t-storms, and more specifically tropical cyclones. I am an avid Hurricane Storm Chaser, even after surviving Hurricane Katrina. I have my own Business FB Page (non-profit) called US Virgin Island Tropical Hurricane Weather Station, which I run, forecast and report on tropical cyclones, while out in the storm. I always "had" my "Weather Channel Hurricane Stowaway Coat" on when I was out in the storms reporting. I can safely vouch that this Coat is totally waterproof, wind-proof! It is comfortable, easy to move in, and really gave me an added protection, mentally too, when wearing it during tropical cyclones. It was my good luck Stowaway Jacket. I had it in aqua and loved it. Never reported during storms without it. But, someone stole it from me last year, and now cannot just yet afford a new one. Hoping so soon, since it is now Hurricane Season and I need to report for our US Virgin Islanders. I cannot imagine my reporting without my Hurricane Stowaway Coat. Hopefully, I can afford to buy one soon. Still, I highly highly recommend the Coat and/or jacket to purchase. It is the best Severe Weather Coat I have owned and I have been through 21 Hurricanes/Tropical cyclones.
So, for any of you who have any doubts as to purchasing the Ladies Gor-tex Stowaway Coat, do not give it a second thought. It is well worth it and last 5 years for me, until it was stolen.
Thanks LLBean! cordelia667

I so wanted to own this stowaway jacket. However, the velcro closures are a show stopper. The velcro snags on sweaters and other clothing and ruins them. I have ruined to many clothes with jackets that have velcro closures. No more. I so hope LL Bean starts using snaps instead of velcro so I can own one of these jackets.

I own a couple of Gore Tex jacket and coat from LLB. I love the light weight.I got a special day offer so I pick this rain coat. I am normally petite size Large but this one I received is tight. I missed the two way zipper also. Sorry, it is going back.

I love this coat! It keeps you dry and is easy to put on. The only thing I would change is that I would make the zipper the kind that can open at either end. Being able to unzip the bottom makes it easier to climb in and out of a vehicle and sit in comfort.

The medium petite size is just right for me (5'4"). I got this in cherry so it would be visible on rainy days. I have had difficulty with L.L.Bean's two-way zippers in the past, so I'm happy that the zipper on this coat is one-way. There's a snap at the top and one at the bottom; the other fasteners are hook-and-loop, which add to the coat's light feel. I like that the hood folds into the collar. Because of our drought I haven't had a chance to wear it in the rain yet, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

This coat is everything I expected. It replaces my 15-yr-old Gore-Tex raincoat, also purchased from LLBean. I do have to say that I miss the 2-way zipper that my old one had, but so far I've not found it to be a major problem.
This coat keeps me dry, there's no body-heat condensation on the inside, and it's light as a feather. And I LOVE the Cherry color; very cheerful and easily seen by motorists as I'm walking along my country road.
I know LLBean probably doesn't want to hear this, but I'm hoping this new coat lasts as long as my old one! :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by chmherri Nice coat, but zipper upgrade needed!
This coat is a very nice quality, but because the zipper is not two way, or there are not zippable side flaps, I felt like a cannoli when sitting down with the coat on. The price point dictates this coat should have ALL the bells and whistles!

L.L. Bean is my default for active wear, as I think they offer good value and the convenience of petite sizes. I already own two well-used old Bean Gore-Tex jackets, including one around thirty years old. It's about as good as the day I bought it, even though it's had a lot of "disrespect." But I was looking for a breathable coat-length I could grab for speedy walks without having to bother with rain pants. I had high hopes for the Stowaway but it just didn't fit the bill for me.
This coat is well-made and very light. I would have preferred something more substantial, but for travelers it's convenient to have an almost weightless full-featured waterproof garment. The sleeves were not too long, which has been more of a problem lately with some Bean petite items I've purchased. The fit was generous in my regular MP, allowing room for layering and a comfortable fit in the shoulders.
But the coat missed in two regards. First, I had terrible trouble with the mesh lining. I just could not adjust it over my clothing so that the coat hung straight at the bottom. In fact, I guessed it might have been defective. If that were the only issue, I would have just exchanged it, but the lack of a two-way zipper was a deal-breaker for me.
How tall a person is may make a difference, but I'm only 5'2" so the zipper extended down far enough to impede my stride. I felt as if I were walking in a kimono and it was a continual frustration. I seem to remember the Stowaway used to have a two-way zipper and why it's been eliminated I cannot imagine.
Sadly, this coat just didn't work for me. I need the breathability of Gore-Tex or comparable product, so I'll either have to resign myself to a jacket and rain pants combination or wait to see if next season's model is more suitable.

Coat needs a two way zipper or a slit on each side along the bottom hem. It's difficult to get into my car with the coat zippered I have to pull the coat up to swing my leg in the drivers seat.

The jacket probably performs well under water but it's too noisy, shiny, and expensive... it's also shapeless (boxy). It doesn't even have a double zipper. I found another one with the competitors at about the same price and it looks much nicer and doesn't make the dreaded noise.
