Dear Valued L.L.Bean Customer,

Our records show that you may have purchased or received a Fortress Quick Access Safe with Biometric Lock. The manufacturer, Fortress Safe, has advised L.L.Bean of a product safety recall affecting these safes. The safes contain a biometric reader that allows unpaired fingerprints to open the safe until a fingerprint is programmed, allowing unauthorized persons, including children, to access hazardous contents, including firearms. This may pose a risk of serious injury or death.

For your safety, please immediately stop using the safe.

If you have a Fortress safe with biometric lock sold by L.L.Bean, item number 514791, please see the attached instructions from Fortress Safe regarding the specific steps you will need to take to receive a free replacement safe.

If you purchased this product as a gift, please pass on this information to the recipient or contact us and we will send this letter to the gift recipient.

Biometric Safe Recall Notice to Consumers

IMPORTANT RECALL NOTICE

Fortress Safe is voluntarily recalling certain safes with biometric locks in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The safes contain a biometric reader that allows unpaired fingerprints to open the safe until a fingerprint is programmed, allowing unauthorized persons, including children, to access hazardous contents, including firearms.

Fortress Safe is aware of a recent lawsuit alleging that a 12-year-old boy died from a firearm obtained from one of these safes. There have been 39 incidents of consumers reporting that their safes have been accessed by unpaired fingerprints.

You should immediately stop using the biometric reader included with the recalled gun safes, remove the batteries, and follow the instructions below to receive a free replacement safe.

  • 55B30BP Cabela’s Quick Access Safe with Biometric Lock

To determine if your unit is impacted by this recall, please look on the back of your safe. It will have a label that looks similar to this:

The number above the bar code is the Model #. If the model number on your unit is one of the Model #’s above, it is part of this voluntary recall. If you have any questions about whether you have an affected safe, please contact our customer Service at (888) 577-9823 and ask for recall assistance.

Steps to Receive a Replacement Safe:

  • Contact our Customer Service Department at 833-588-9181, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time and request Recall Assistance, or
  • Use the link below and fill out your contact information and our team will contact you.

To confirm your safe is part of the recall, you will be required to send a photo of your unit, including pictures of the biometric reader and the serial number sticker on the back of your unit. Please email a picture of the biometric reader and a picture of the serial number to: biometricrecall@xpeditionllc.com

1. After confirming the above, to receive a replacement safe, you will be required to disable the biometric reader by puncturing the reader using a screwdriver and emailing a photo of the disabled reader to Fortress Safe at: biometricrecall@xpeditionllc.com

2. To disable the biometric reader, follow these instructions:

  • Wear Safety glasses
  • Puncture the reader by hitting the reader with a screwdriver – strike the screwdriver with a hammer.

3. Once Fortress Safe receives the photo of the disabled safe, we will send you an equivalent Fortress Brand Biometric Safe.

4. Dispose of your disabled safe in your trash.
