How to Size Cross-Country Skis

Our resident ski aficionado, Mackenzie, takes us through the steps for choosing the right size cross-country skis for the different types of conditions you might encounter.

4 Min. Watch | Winter

Step 1: Types of Cross-Country Skis

• Classic – These come in three types: Touring, Performance and Backcountry.

• Skate – These require a wide groomed lane and, as the name suggests, a technique that is similar to ice skating.

Step 2: Getting the Right Size

Ski sizes are based on body weight and each ski size has an ideal user weight range. Other factors that help determine ski size include skill level, any extra weight you might be carrying and the snow conditions.

Step 3: What the Right Size Ski Looks Like

With the right ski length, you will get the best combination of grip and glide, or just glide in the case of skate skis. You’ll also find it easier to stop and turn.

Step 4: What a Ski that’s Too Short Looks Like

If skis are too short, you’ll be too heavy for the ski and the grip section of the ski will always be compressed into the snow. They’ll grip like crazy but won’t glide well at all.

Step 5: What a Ski that’s Too Long Looks Like

Skis that are too long will glide super-fast but you won’t be heavy enough to compress the fish-scale pattern into the snow and you won’t get the grip you need.

Step 6: Use Our Ski Chart

To make it easy, we’ve added the size charts of weight ranges for each size ski to all our skis on
