PFAS
Per-and-Polyfluoroalkyl Substances
PFAS are a group of chemicals used in a variety of industrial applications and consumer products because of their heat, water, and stain-resistant properties. While used mostly in industrial processes, PFAS can be applied to outerwear, clothes, shoes, and accessories to make them more water and stain resistant while keeping the fabric breathable. Along with many apparel and outdoor brands, L.L.Bean has used PFAS in the manufacturing of products that require water and stain resistant properties.
For the past several years – in response to the environmental and health concerns recently shown to be associated with PFAS – L.L.Bean has been testing and implementing PFAS-free replacement applications. Thanks to this work, we have successfully transitioned to PFAS-free durable water repellent (DWR) alternatives in the manufacturing of L.L.Bean labeled products beginning in Fall of 2024.
Where permissible, we will sell the limited amount of PFAS positive items we have remaining in our inventory which is environmentally preferrable to disposal. When shopping online, please refer to the product pages for product specific information. When shopping in store, please ask a retail associate for assistance.
Our journey to manufacturing products with PFAS-free DWR that still meet our quality standards required a lot of hard work and determination, but we are immensely proud of the outcome. L.L.Bean is a stakeholder company committed to doing what is in the best interest of our customers, employees, shareholders, vendors, communities, and the natural environment. We believe our transition to PFAS-free DWR and plan for managing remaining product upholds that commitment.
