Hi, I’m Megan, Senior Designer here at L.L.Bean, and today we’re going to take a look at our iconic fisherman sweaters.

Every stitch in these sweaters tells a story. These cable sweaters go way back to Ireland’s Aran Islands, where each cable represented something different for the fishermen who wore them, from good luck to a plentiful catch.

We wanted to recreate those cable patterns for sweaters as iconic as their inspiration.

And the cables are more than just a design flourish. The crossing of stitches creates a thicker and loftier knit that’s warmer and more structured than a jersey knit.
