From Maine to Tokyo and Back
In November 1992, L.L.Bean made the bold move to open our first store outside of Maine in Tokyo, Japan – more than 6,600 miles from our Flagship Store in Freeport.
Why Japan? In the early 1990s, we noticed our store had become the site of a sort of pilgrimage: we were experiencing an influx of Japanese customers, mirroring an exponential growth in mail orders emanating from Japan.
With our popularity validated, we embarked for Japan, and our overseas trial evolved into an authentic exportation of L.L.Bean’s heritage through the lens of a separate culture, ultimately inspiring a unique version of American style and nostalgia half a world away.
Since then, L.L.Bean’s collaborations with Japanese designers and brands have become a cornerstone of our success in Japan, blending classic Americana with the innovative spirit of Japan’s creative community.
