A Bag Built for the Long Haul

Introduced in 1944 as Bean’s Ice Carrier for hauling ice from “car to chest,” our legendary Maine-made tote has evolved into something of a trendsetter. From the office to the beach, often with monograms that showcase names, places, or a clever sense of irony, Boat and Totes aren’t just perfectly functional, they’re a perfect reflection of your personality. They’re also practically indestructible.

Often Imitated. Never Duplicated.

In Brunswick, Maine, a team of expert craftspeople stitch together between 3,500 and 4,000 totes a day, putting incredible care and attention to detail into every single bag they make. They’ve had a lot of practice, after all – little has changed from the original design. It still has the same iconic details, in durable American canvas, with a reinforced double-layer bottom and heavy-duty nylon stitching. The handles are still tested to hold up to 500 pounds. And it’s still made right here in Maine, one tote at a time. Who else can claim that?

As Good as Before (But More)

What started as the Bean’s Ice Carrier was reintroduced in 1965 as the Boat and Tote, available in only two colors: nautical red and blue. Today, the options include a seemingly endless variety of colors and sizes. They come in a pouch, mini tote, and small, medium (our bestseller!), large, and extra-large sizes. Many come in zippered or open-top options, with a choice of short or long handles. And we haven’t even gotten to the monograms yet!

Say It with a Tote

Monogramming is a Boat and Tote mainstay, and it’s what makes the tote truly yours. From baby names and household chores (laundry, anyone?) to weddings, anniversaries, sports, and even the viral Ironic Boat and Tote trend, we’ve seen it all when it comes to what goes on – and in – a Boat and Tote.

“What I love about Boat and Tote is that it doesn’t just carry stuff, it carries emotions and memories for people over time.”

It’s All in the Details

The longevity of the Boat and Tote design is something that’s rare to find these days. Many people still carry the totes they’ve had for decades. That’s a testament to the incredible skill of our stitchers, the quality of the materials, and the brilliance of the blueprint that was drawn up over 80 years ago.
