5 Essential Tips for Hiking with Dogs

The difference between a good hike and a “ruff” one all comes down to a little planning.

Hiking is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, and it's even better with your furry friend by your side. Here are five essential tips to ensure your hiking adventures with your dog are safe, fun, and memorable.

Tip 1: Be Prepared with Research and Planning

Before you hit the trail, research dog-friendly trails and check the weather. Some trails are more suitable for dogs than others; factors like steepness, terrain, and crowd levels all play into your decision and ensure you aren’t barking up the wrong tree. Make sure the trail allows dogs and is appropriate for your dog's fitness level.

Tip 2: Bring Water and Snacks

Always carry enough water and food for both you and your dog. Just like you, dogs can get dehydrated quickly – especially on hot days. A collapsible bowl is a handy piece of gear for easy water breaks. Don't rely on finding water sources on the trail!

TIP 3: GEAR UP!

Invest in some dog-specific gear to make your hike easier. Along with your hiking essentials, consider items like:
• Long leash
• Microfiber towel
• Dog booties
• Pack for your dog to carry their own supplies
• Poop bags

Tip 4: Consider Other Hikers

Be mindful of other hikers and their comfort levels with dogs. Keep your dog close, ensure they yield to other hikers, and have them under voice command if they're off-leash. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, so it's important to be considerate.

Tip 5: Stay Safe and Healthy

Pay close attention to your dog's condition during and after the hike. If you see any warning signs that they’re too hot or too tired, take a break to refuel. And when you return to the car, check for ticks, other critters, burrs, and anything else they might have picked up on the trail. You don’t want to bring any of those things for a ride – and you definitely don’t want to bring them home!
