[00:00:00.23] Hi, I'm Dave.
[00:00:01.07] And I'm Adam, and we're--
[00:00:03.06] Oh, blooper 1. Hi, I'm Dave.
[00:00:06.45] I'm Adam, and this is Willa.
[00:00:08.46] And we're here to show you five essential tips for hiking with your dog. So let's go.
[00:00:13.20] So our first tip-- be prepared. Before you even hit the trail, think about what you and your dog are up to for this hike. Some trails are much more dog-friendly than others in terms of steepness, terrain, and crowds. And some trails don't allow dogs at all or only allow them on leash. Get familiar with your options before you go, and don't forget to check the weather. If it's hot or cold enough to make you uncomfortable, you can bet it'll be uncomfortable for your dog, too.
[00:00:35.22] Tip number 2-- bring water and snacks. Always carry enough water and food for you and your dog. Dogs can get dehydrated quickly, especially on hot days. We like to use a collapsible bowl for Willa. It's quick and easy and makes water breaks a breeze. Don't count on there being a water source on the trail.
[00:00:51.15] Tip number 3-- gear up. In addition to your hiking essentials, investing in some dog-specific gear and gadgets can make things easier for both of you. Along with a collapsible bowl, consider things like a long leash, a microfiber towel, a dog first aid kit, dog booties, harness, or even a pack for your dog to carry their own supplies, and most importantly, poop bags. It's important to make sure you clean up after your dog.
[00:01:13.72] Tip number 4-- consider other hikers. When encountering other hikers and possibly other dogs, you're responsible for your dog's behavior. Other hikers may not be comfortable with dogs, so make sure your pup stays in your area, knows how to yield to other hikers, and is under voice command if they're off leash.
[00:01:30.43] And our final tip-- stay safe and healthy. During and after your hike, keep a close eye on your dog to make sure they aren't too hot or too tired. And when you get back to the car, always check your dog for ticks or any other critters they may have picked up on the trail. Let's recap.
[00:01:43.86] The tips we covered today included being prepared, bringing plenty of water and snacks, getting some dog-specific gear, being mindful of other hikers, and staying safe and healthy.
