Hiking with Kids in 6 Easy Tips

Make sure your next hike ends in cheers and not tears.

2-3 Min. Watch | Hiking

Hiking with young kids can sometimes feel daunting, but it doesn’t have to. Follow these simple tips and tricks to ensure your next outing is fun and stress-free for everyone on the trail.

Tip 1: Find the right hike

Choose a trail that’s too long, too steep, or too boring, and you may need to cut the hike short — especially when you’re with little kids. Before choosing a trail, go online to find the level of difficulty, best time of day to go, bathroom availability, picnic spots, and other resources that will make the hike ideal for your little hikers.

Pro tip:

Know where you’re going. Print trail maps or take a photo of the map on site before starting your hike.

Tip 2: Bring the right gear

Keeping kids safe and comfortable is key for a successful hike. Here are some hiking essentials you always want on the trail.

• Good hiking shoes/boots for support
• Comfortable, versatile layers
• An extra change of clothes (you never know what they may get into)
• Bug Spray, sunscreen, and a hat for protection
• Consider a child carrier pack if you have teeny tiny hikers

Tip 3: Pack lots of snacks and drinks

Hydration is extremely important with any outdoor activity, so be sure to have ample water on hand. And because hangry kids are not happy hikers, high-powered snacks like trail mix and granola bars are an absolute must. This will give them the boost they need to keep going and can also be a great motivator.

Tip 4: Take lots of breaks

You may be rearing to go for miles, but kids may not. Adding little breaks keeps the hike from feeling too long and gives kids a chance to recharge, take a bathroom break or simply marvel at their surroundings.

Tip 5: Play games

Kids get bored easily, so come up with some fun games to play while hiking like I SPY or scavenger hunts. Giving kids fun tasks to complete during your hike keeps them happy and engaged.

Tip 6: Enjoy the little things

Hiking with kids can be unpredictable. But no matter what obstacles you come across, the time outside together is always worth it. There’s usually something new to discover, even if it wasn’t part of the plan. Keep this in mind for you and your little hikers, and every hike will be successful in its own way.
