[00:00:00.05] This jacket looks great and fits great. It's my new go to jacket. It's very durable and keeps me very warm.
[00:00:06.39] Appreciate the review. Warm, durable, highly recommended. Thanks.
[00:00:13.94] Yeah. Hi, my name is Jon. I'm a product development manager at L.L.Bean, and I've been here for 16 years. In the summer, I like to get on the water, whether it's a paddle board, a boat. In the winter, I like to be in the snow. We're currently standing in the outerwear workroom in the new L.L.Bean headquarters in Freeport, Maine. The outerwear workroom is where we discuss all the new developments, review the fabrics, and come up with the assortment for the upcoming season.
[00:00:35.52] I'll be talking to you today about utility insulated collection. And the piece in front of me is our new utility insulated jacket. We think of our assortment at Bean as active, rugged, and casual. And this piece, this collection really epitomizes the rugged part of the collection. What I love about outerwear at L.L.Bean is the purposeful, functional decision making we make with each product. Every fabric, every design detail has a reason for being on the jacket, as part of the fabric, as part of the finish.
[00:01:00.39] The fabric we use for our Bean's insulated utility jacket is a 60% cotton, 40% nylon, 8 ounce plain weave fabric. Plain weave is a type of construction of the fabric. We use cotton 60% because cotton's breathable, it washes in, and it's comfortable. That nylon content gives the fabric its abrasion resistance, its durability.
[00:01:18.85] So the tests we do in the L.L.Bean lab to prove the durability of this fabric are one, abrasion testing, number two, our tear strength testing, number 3, our bursting strength testing.
[00:01:28.43] The abrasion testing is literally a piece of sandpaper that just goes in a circular pattern over the face of the fabric. The fabric fails if you get a hole in the fabric. And this particular fabric, we went 60,000 cycles and we had to stop the test. There was no hole.
[00:01:41.54] So we have our test standards, what we do in the lab. That's the official test result. But I like to also see in the real life how the fabric's going to perform. This particular fabric, I have a sandpaper block, 36 grit sandpaper. Lots of noise, lots of abrasion. No difference. Completely abrasion resistant.
[00:02:00.74] So not only is the utility collection centered around a durable fabric, we also have some purposeful, functional design details built throughout. On the outside of the garment, the center front has a storm flap, which protects from light, wind and light rain. On the instep, we also have a placket, which does the same.
[00:02:16.50] Down the center front, we have our snaps. We have this really unique snap connection with a finger loop. Get your finger behind it so you can snap it. We also have a number 5 center front zipper with a nice zipper puller you can grab with gloves or your bare hands. On the outside front, we have two chest pockets, as well as two hand pockets with tricot, which is a lightweight fleece lining, for comfort and warmth. On the sleeves, we have a gusset with a snap closure. We really designed this garment to move, to be functional.
[00:02:46.11] On the back of a garment. We built my favorite feature, which is the bias swing back. It really allows the garment to move with you when you're doing your activities outside.
[00:02:54.49] Under the arm, we have a gusset that gives you that extra mobility when you're moving your hands up. Additionally, we've built darts into the sleeve, which gives the articulation of the sleeve, to make it more comfortable when you're wearing it.
[00:03:06.31] On the interior, we use a 100% recycled polyester lining with diamond quilting to hold our utility insulation in place. We've also done an inverted pleat to complement the bias swing back for really some great outward motion.
[00:03:18.51] On the inside, we have a stow pocket for your stowables, as well as a hanging locker loop, if you want to hang it.
[00:03:25.05] So Jon, I just have some reviews from a few customers that I wanted you to read.
[00:03:29.31] This is a dope jacket. It's warm on its own, but it has just enough room for an extra layer. It looks awesome and goes with everything in my closet. Thanks for the dope review.
[00:03:39.83] As a product developer at Bean, it's very rewarding to see a product out in the wild that I've worked on, and a piece that they're going to have for a long time. I'm super proud of the utility insulated collection. As an outdoors person myself, nothing's more rewarding than seeing other people enjoy the products we make outside.
