Rated 2 out of 5 by Buddysmom2 Not really ultra anything
I have a Choclolate Lab who needs a long walk twice a day. I bought this coat last fall as a 'tweener' my long heavy down coat and my fall coat. For that purpose, it worked, except the wind tended to go down the front collar when I had the hood up. No way could this coat be called ultra warm though. The color was not a dark raspberry but a BRIGHT raspberry. No need to worry about being seen at night in that! The material is not very durable...I have several tears in the sleeves and shoulder which are now losing the down. Lot a money for a coat that only lasted one season. Hope Bean is not following other manufacturers and cheaping out on quality.

I'm 5'6", 125 lbs., and this coat in medium comes to just above my knees. For such a lightweight coat, it is surprisingly warm and windproof. The zipper's being made of metal is a rare plus - and easy to get going. I got the coat in "Dark Raspberry" which is an eye-popping reddish-fuchsia; some might find it a bit much but it is also gorgeous. The fit is very roomy - which is great for layering; this is a barn-cleaning and woods-walking coat for me so I accept the somewhat baggy look as a trade-off for being able to fit a heavy shirt and vest, or even a fleece jacket, underneath on truly bitter days. The hood stays up in the wind. The only reason I don't give the coat five stars is that, ideally, the length would be four or five inches longer, to cover my entire knees. And with the attractive seam-installed pockets with their thin zippers, I fear the zippers' wearing out and leaving the smallish pockets insecure. That's why, for pure practicality, I prefer square, patch pockets. Otherwise, I really love this coat!

This coat is absolutely marvelous! I have 2 of them - the above knee and the long one. They are very cozy and keep me very warm. they are not bulky like some, so you do not look like a jet-puffed marshmallow. They wash up great, but remember to take the fur ruff off - I forgot once and singed it badly in the dryer. I called LL Bean and they sent me a new one absolutely free!
I love Bean's customer service, too. They answer the phone with a LIVE person and are always so friendly and helpful.
I have had these coats for quite a few years and just purchased a new one for my step-daughter because she loved mine so much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MaestraB Light, warm, very comfortable
This is a terrific coat. By far the best combination that I have found of real warmth while weighing practically nothing. It's even a great color (periwinkle).
Only one thing -- the pockets are virtually non-functional. As a dogwalker, I need at least three pockets for plastic bags, treats, keys, and gloves. The two external pockets on this coat are tiny, and the two internal ones are impractical in very cold weather (and not very large either). The lack of pockets was almost a dealbreaker, except I've found after much looking that finding extra pockets on women's coats is next to impossible. So I bought it. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the bags, the gloves, the keys...

I really liked the look and feel of this coat (although I thought the fur on the hood could have been of a better quality) - but the coat did not have any shape to it. It was disappointing because the length was perfect, the weight was perfect and I was hoping the fit would be perfect. Oh well, LLBean has plenty more coats I can try!

Very pleased with this coat. Took a risk and purchased in white. Will have to wait to see how it cleans up. Warn, soft inner wrist cuffs. Like the split zipper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by LLBeanformerpicker Very warm, winter appropriate for cold weather
I purchase this item in November 9, 2011 online and received it in great condition and arrived safely to my doorstep. It was not my
first choice, but I like the reviews.
I wore the coat daily for about 3 months and later noticed the thread on a seam before the pocket was coming undone about a 1/4 inch. Later it increased to the whole square portion coming undone due to the fact it was located near the pocket, I think repetitive use caused the stitching to deteriorate and break apart. I would of sewn it up myself but its difficult to get to the inside liner.
I love it other than that small stitching problem. A minor flaw
that I'm sure 99.8% of the coats are fine.
WIND and SNOW: (YES)
This it is a very sturdy warm coat. The hood keeps you warm on those brisk windy winter days when the snow it blowing all around. Used it once to snow plow the driveway it did hold up well to wind for the 2 hours I was outside. I like it because you can remove the hood when you don't need it.
RAIN: (NO)
Does not hold up to rain very well . I walked about 1/2 mile in a wet dripping rain snow event and was soaked right through to my underclothes.
So, I am returning it. I'm not sure yet about getting another one
even though without the stitching problem I just love its warmth.
I'm glad LL Bean stands behind their products, unlike so many
other companies that don't.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RILibrarian Good basic coat
I have a long LL Bean coat with tons of pockets, which will always be my go to coat for bad weather or a long walk. I wanted another one that was a little more flattering for wearing daily to work when it isn't bad weather.
This coat is perfect for that. I wish it had a couple more pockets, it only has the ones for your hands, but at least they zipper.
I ordered the red color but it is much more of a bright pink so I am returning that one. I now have the brown color one and it is nice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by malica Not as warm as advertised
I retired an old down coat when I bought this one and now wish I had kept the old one. Even on days when the weather is above freezing and I am wearing a sweater under it, it doesn't keep me warm. The wind goes right through it. I like it in other respects but wish I had returned it early in the season and looked for a warmer coat.

I live in a snowbelt near Lake Huron, and went for a walk today in a blizzard. I needed neither a hat nor a scarf because I own this wonderful coat. It zips up right to my chin, and the Velcro flaps on the hood protect my face as well. Some people don't like the double zipper, but I find it convenient for driving. I have learned to get the right angle to pull it up easily. The light weight of this down coat is deceiving: It is plenty warm enough for Ontario winters, but allows for easy movement even with a couple of layers under it. I was afraid I was foolish to buy a white coat, and, of course, it does need frequent washing. That doesn't matter, though, because it launders very well. Like any down garment, it is essential to dry it in a dryer until it is completely dry; otherwise the down will clump. I have had it a year, and it still looks new. I was afraid it would make me look like a marshmallow, but it actually has a nice line. My favourite coat for the snowy winter we are having this year!
