Delta Airlines flags this and since it is bigger than the measuring bin it always has to be checked. Defeats the purpose of having a "carry-on" when it can't be a carry-on.

I just returned from two weeks in Africa, my first trip with this luggage, which performed quite well. (I also purchased the matching Accessory Bag, which I used as a carry-on, but always checked this Rolling Pullman Medium.) I did laundry only once; otherwise, I had plenty of space for a week's supply of clothing and extra walking shoes. The luggage opens to equal halves, the contents of which can be kept separate. The handle is relatively sturdy. The luggage rolls easily. After eight flights, several buses and one train, I can say the luggage is suitably durable, like an elephant's hide. I especially liked that my luggage was smaller than what most people brought, and it was easy to spot on the carousel. Outer pockets are well designed for liquids and documents, etc. My only complaint is that the sleeve on the Accessory Bag is opened or closed by a velcro strip way too wide -- it's very difficult to "tear" apart. A simpler design would be better. Otherwise, I can recommend both pieces with confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LLBFAN33 Overpacked and still more room! ;-)
I still can't believe how much I packed in this luggage! I went on a 6 day trip to Florida and over packed! I had more than enough clothes for beach, pool, casual, and dresses for dinner and shoes, but did not even wear all the clothes! I was amazed at how much this bag held! Definitely well worth the money for the quality and size. Thank you LLBean! Just please make the lining on the extra large big enough to hold the large luggage inside. Other than that, it was a great buy! Very pleased!

A very durable and stylish piece of travel luggage that does not draw attention to itself. It has traveled well and fits into any on board space. I especially like the "suit bag" and the zippered mesh covers on the inside, the moisture resistant toiletries compartment on the outside.

This was a replacement for an older Sportsman Carry-On, which I made the mistake of CHECKING on the airline trip home. I retrieved it off the carousel STAPLED together! LL Bean, true to their word, gave me no trouble replacing it.
The old bag had a sticky zipper problem which LLB has apparently resolved, but the new bag seems far less sturdy and it does not contain the nice enclosed garment bag its predecessor had.
Overall, I feel this bag is of no better quality than those of far cheaper competitors. Even with the endless warranty, can't recommend. 3 stars go to customer service.

Rated 2 out of 5 by HopewellScouter It's OK
The changes to this bag have made it less traveler friendly with smaller volume and more "flimsy" construction details. It will likely suit my needs because I travel a lot less than before I retired, but I still have my doubts about whether it will hold up to the rough and tumble world of the airline baggage handler. Nevertheless, the features are OK (handle pulls nicely, zippers work as expected) but the suit enclosure is really small and cheesy. Not sure I'll get much use out of that. And the outside zipper compartment is quite a bit smaller than the previous version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Runner110 Good size suitcase
I purchased this suitcase as a carry on piece or something by car travel. It does hold a lot for a few days. There are many compartments and the luggage does expand as it if filled.
It is well constructed and lightweight. For those with electronic equipment it is a great piece of luggage to hold a laptop and some camera equipment , and you take it with you.

I bought this for a 10 day trip to Canada. It worked great. I had it stuffed full on my way to Canada and I had to make it bigger to bring it home. I was able to carry it on both to and from Canada without any difficulties.
I would highly recommend this bag. It does a great job!

Rated 2 out of 5 by MikeNE The Bag it Replaced was Better
Six yrs ago purchased earlier version which was a wonderful bag. Lots of room, sturdy, and good looking. After nearly a million miles of travel the leather corners gave out, and about midway in its life the middle position on the expanding handle stopped working. So I bought another of the same model. Except it's not the same model. Slightly more room in the outside pockets but slightly less inside. And the expanding handle's just downright flimsy. Wouldn't have to wait a few yrs for the middle position to stop working as it came that way with this new one. Returned it disappointed as it was no better than bags available for half the price. Have always been pleased with LL Bean products but this just doesn't meet their old standard anyway.

I am happy with my new LL Bean Sportsman Expandable Rolling Pullman. I travel very often and had to retire this suitcase's ancestor after about 14 years of use due to a broken zipper. This suitcase is lighter in weight and I really like the separate compartments inside which allow me to zip my suit coat and dress shirts on one side and everything else on the other. Another nice feature is the long handle. My only "complaint" is that the handle is somewhat wimpy. It wiggles around a bit, and I'm not sure how long it will hold up.
