Rated 4 out of 5 by Altruistguy LOVE this jacket; but slight manufacturing defect
I LOVE just about everything about this jacket.
- The thick, lushous wool!
- The warm (but thin) PrimaLoft insulation
- The MANY pockets (including two huge ones in front and the huge one in back)
- The excellent zipper for fast on/off
- The convenient zipper flap (with nice easy snaps) for serious cold conditions (or to keep zipper from icing up in cold rain)
- The waist cord that will tighten the jacket against my body -- sealing out the cold from below (something that my Navy Pea Coat lacks)
- Nice cuffs in the sleeves that will further seal out the cold (again, something my Navy Pea Coat lacks)
HOWEVER, mine arrived with the two slash handwarmer pockets sewn shut. So I'm returning it.
I didn't get a chance to actually try out this jacket in cold conditions, but I'm thinking that it is probably one of the warmest jackets I've ever tried on -- perhaps TOO warm for the winters here in SW Michigan.
So -- if you are wanting a beautiful, HIGHLY functional, spectacularly warm jacket, this may be the one for you (i.e., if they can get their quality control better or if you are OK with opening up seams yourself or if you don't care about the handwarmer pockets).

Rated 5 out of 5 by IthacaFan Awesome Coat
I actually bought mine close to 20 years ago and It's still going strong. It's the warmest, most comfortable hunting coat I've owned and if it wears out before I do, I'll definitely buy another one. I couldn't be happier with it.

This is a great winter coat. Would recommend it to anyone. LLBean knows how to give good customer service and sell good products. Keep it up LLBean.

Rated 3 out of 5 by LKSt Way too big
This is an awesome coat, but it's sized way, way too large. I bought a medium for my son who normally wears a large in coats but even that swims on him--even after putting on heavy layers under it. With no smalls available in loden until next summer, I'll be returning this. I would recommend it to a friend, but would advise them to buy 2 sizes smaller than they normally wear. Disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Acemoose Runs a little small
Normally I wear Men's Medium. I bought the red plaid version of this in M and it was so tight that I felt like one of those tube balloons with the waving hands that you see in used car lots. I had to open up some seams and make vents so I could move around in relative comfort -- bye bye Bean warranty, but I can always wear this for snow shoveling. Yes I could have sent it back but think "New York City in 20 degree weather, 25 mph winds, and me with no winter coat", and you will see that I had to do this. For more on this red plaid coat, you can see my review below. SO.. I bought the Loden in Large and it is MUCH better -- it still could use a two way zip and I will still open up some seams on the side to make vents, but I am HAPPY with this coat. The collar is a bit thin but I will open it up and stuff it with Thinsulate and wool #in a series of baffles# to keep my neck warm. Yes I know, voiding the LL Bean warranty again but at least I will have what I like and what suits me, and I will be HAPPY. BTW Mom taught me how to sew. Dad taught me how to work on cars. I taught myself survival skills. Everything I wore today, in 20 degree weather, from head to toe was LL Bean and I laughed at the cold.

Rated 4 out of 5 by paxcanfield Really warm, high-quality coat
Really like this coat--very warm, and the roomy fit works for me since I tend to layer stuff underneath. I agree that it could use a two-way zipper, but no big deal. When mine arrived a long seam opened up in the lining of the right sleeve, so I need to drop it off at the local Bean's store to have it sent off for repair. So four stars instead of five, but I'd still recommend it.

Great coat. It does run big, but so do I. The xxl tall is perfect. It will be great for shoveling and walking in the winter months. I think it runs a bit long, but awesome othervise.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Acemoose No double zipper, no pull tabs for zippers
First of all, this coat is not as thick or as warm as it should be -- I am disappointed but since this is the only decent thing I cold find, I will keep it and just layer stuff under it.
Secondly, why no double zipper? This coat goes almost to my knees and is snug on me -- and I am not phat. Should I want to grab my keys in my pants pocket I have to either heft up the coat or totally unzip it. A double zipper would have made the difference.
Then the zipper pulls are small and dainty and get lost under the pocket seam. I have to fish around for it with bare fingers -- Yes I can remedy that by adding zipper pull tabs but you Bean, should have been the ones to do that.
It has plenty of outer and inner pockets but needs a chest pocket on either side of the interior -- one is not enough.

I just received my Maine Guide parka. The reviews were great in selecting a size as I normally wear a XXL and I ordered the parka in XL. Sleeve length is perfect and lots of shoulder room to move around without binding up. The quality of the material is exceptional and the parka is very well made, I hunt Northern British Columbia for moose and wool can't be beat for quietness and warmth. Can't wait to try this parka out.
