The coat is very warm, well made and has lots of nice touches. The only issue I have is with sizing. I read the chart and based on the chest size, ordered the XL. I recently bought a couple suits, both had size 46 jackets from a quality men's store. However, the XL was much too large. I returned it and the L fits much better. I can wear the Large over a heavy fleece zip up jacket and still have room.

Rated 4 out of 5áby MattCG Fine jacket
I followed the advice of many of the reviews and ordered 1 size down which really worked out well. This is one of the warmest jackets I own and have found it performs very well with just a heavy shirt or fleece underneath. Cuts the wind, stands up to the cold, and zips up tight. The wool collar can be itchy, but beats a cold neck. I've worn it in sub zero wind chill with a long tee shirt underneath and did fine. My only problem with this jacket is that it should be US made.

Rated 5 out of 5áby Clambroth Black and Red parka
Great parka. Red and Black plaid, while dated looking, is also a timeless classic. Nice deep colors. Nothing better than a heavy wool jacket in extreme cold. With the prima loft insulation you don't need to wear any other layers under this thing. Well made and very rugged - exactly what I was looking for to replace a very old men's wool parka for every day winter wear in the northeast. Size at xl was perfect fit.

I love the coat. I read the comments about sizing. They do run large. I usually wear a large, but I ordered a medium. fits good, room for layering.

I love this coat. It's warm, it fits just right and it has classic good looks. I have the red and black plaid in XL. In some LL Bean coats I am between XL and XXL with neither size really fitting properly, this is not the case with this coat.
I have the room in the shoulders that I need without feeling like the rest of the coat is too big. It's just right with room for layers and room to move. I like the internal pockets at the bottom, a good place for your hat and gloves without taking up room in the outside pockets.

Rated 2 out of 5áby matthewSS almost a very nice coat.
i liked a lot about this coat, but the cut fit me weird
i am 5-10 185 lbs, medium build i suppose, not fat, not skinny.
i ordered a small based on reviews stating this coat was large
the coat is bell shaped, neck was too tight, and construction around the neck area had bunched seams which pulled things oddly.
it mostly fit in the chest and arms, but was absolutely huge in the belly and waist, i could fit 3 large pillows in it, though tightly. my wife laughed out loud when i tried it on and said it made me look like a cartoon. i agree. however, had it been comfortable in the neck i would have kept it because i really just needed it for the woods, and it seemed durable and warm.
i also wished the collar was not floppy, it would not stay up, sitting out in the cold, it is nice to flip up the collar.
having said that, this coat would fit someone with a small neck and a large belly. i do have a little bit of a thick muscular neck, a boxy cut like the peacoat fit me nicely. i tried on a medium peacoat in the store and it was too large, but proportionally. i had actually planned to buy a small peacoat online when i got home, but it seems they just pulled it for sale.

Rated 2 out of 5áby Doak Great coat but too Big.
I ordered the coat believing that I needed a double large extra tall.It arrived the quality was excellent. However the coat was huge. So I returned it. Perhaps next year I need to shop earlier and make a more suitable choice. The rating does not reflect the quality of the coat....more to the fact that I had selected a Double extra tall.

The coat is well made. The Zipper like on every garment I have bought from LLBean is stout. Plenty of pockets for storing gloves, hats and scarfs. I wish I had bought it a long time ago. I can wear it over a tee shirt wihen it is 5 degrees outside and stay warm

This coat is very warm and very comfortable. It is a heavy weighted coat(so if you are looking for a light weight coat--this is not it). It has a lot of pockets and plenty of room to move around --even when layering. Great for Midwest Winters and for hunting. I definitely recommend it. My husband was very impressed when he opened it on Christmas!! The fit is beautiful and true to size.

I've been a lifelong L.L. Bean fan (grew up wearing the classics) but it'd been a (long) while since I'd purchased anything new. This item solidified my faith in Bean; they still deliver affordable, good-looking, well-made products that perform as advertised.
I needed an all-purpose winter coat for city wear and didn't want to look like I was about to go skiing/mountaineering, nor ice-fishing in Yakutsk (also didn't want to wear a long wool dress coat or a peacoat), and this parka provided. I have the Loden Heather and it looks dark green from a few feet away; up close there are brighter green flecks interspersed with the darker green tones.
It is heavy, warm, well-made, and generously-sized. I'm 6'3", 200 lb., and the large fits me well. If you are not as big as me, and still routinely wear size-L sweaters, sport shirts, etc., think twice about getting a large in this coat. It's made for movement and for layering underneath. There are a lot of non-tiny men who would likely take a medium in this parka.
Even when it fits, it's not tailored, like so many of the "winter" coats that designers make, but it's warmer than any of these peacoat-looking items, and still has a classic look. It's a true hunting coat, and has an authentic cut, so that one can hoist a rifle or shotgun, or just put a seatbelt on without too much straining.
The collar unfolds to warmly and comfortably ensconce the neck, and can be held in this position by a strap which is, when not in use, secured in place with a well-placed button. There are a lot of good pockets, the handwarmers being well-placed and quite deep, while the lower pockets are also voluminous and easy to snap with one hand (two snaps per pocket).
If you need maximum warmth, you might need down, but few of us are outside in frigid temps long enough. You can throw this on over a single layer for an evening errand in cold weather (and the smooth lining makes donning this parka a joy). As a field jacket, I can imagine that it would be highly functional. With a fleece jacket underneath, the functional-use temp drops considerably. If I layer well, I can get quite hot in this parka very quickly. Way too warm to drive in for more than short periods in very cold weather. Today while wearing this parka, I found myself driving in 30║F weather without the heat on in the car.
A slightly more tailored version of this parka in Navy would be a real coup. As it stands, if you are contemplating, just buy this already!
