This was my first fly rod outfit and I've had it for years and have fished all types of water with it including salt water. Easy to cast and excellent quality. The rod is also incredibly tough and has taken a beating and continues to perform. I couldn't imagine a better outfit to get started in fly fishing.

I've had this combo for two years now and it's been great. It's withstood two years of winter steelie, fall salmon and spring bow runs in Upstate NY. Not too mention the constant bumps and dings of 200+ hours on the water. Still ticking. Just what I expect from LLBean.

I've always had entry level fly rods and this is the first mid range outfit I've owned. The line comes off the reel smooth and the drag is very smooth. I like that it has a very low audible click on the strip and retrieve as well. The action is crisp and accurate and very light in the hand. I've only dry casted it on the lawn when I first received it, but I can't wait to try it on the water. Extremely pleased and haven't even fished with it yet. Not to mention I ordered it on Monday at 10am, and it arrived before non the next day. That's fast service.

A lot of fun hauling in stripers on the four piece Streamlight Ultra outfit.
Have the 7wt through 9wt setup. The rods have enough backbone to get the line way out there - outcasting a number of spin reel guys. Yet have enough flex to cushion the strikes, and ensuing fight.
Purchased LL Bean gear, as it was one of three brands that came highly recommended by a professional fly fishing instructor (not affiliated with any of the brands), when my wife & I took lessons.
Been an absolute joy striper fishing with the Streamlight Ultra setup, in the very first season fly fishing. Looking forward to next (sophomore) season.

Bought this at the Freeport store in June 2012 based upon the sales rep's recommendation for bass and trout fishing. I could not be more pleased. I have used it mostly on ponds and lakes in MA and ME, with some river fishing in MA. The rod has very nice flex which communicates to you what the fish is doing, and the #2 SL Ultra reel works smoothly and is nicely balanced for this rod. The reel-on-rod case is large enough to hold an extra spool in its own waxed-leather Bean case, and is easy to carry on trips. The WF 6 wt line included on the reel is a very good line and easy to cast. I have caught bass and panfish in ME and MA, and many landlocked salmon and native trout up to 2 lbs in ME with this outfit. This is a very nice outfit which is certainly worth its price, and I recommend it highly. You can spend more for an outfit, but for someone getting started in fly fishing, this is an excellent choice that will last for years.

After doing some research on fly fishing and fly rods, I settled on the 7wt for my upcoming trip to SW Florida to fish the channels. I am very happy with the setup and ease of use. Very nice quality and the reel was ready to go. Set came with a travel case and was nice to have as I was flying there. After a some practice, I was able to set the fly about where I wanted to. Still need some practice but would recommend this set.

I'm always looking for great values, not cheap prices. I bought this rod as a way to get into the sport. I hired a guide and took my rod and found the guide fully impressed with the quality and ease of casting for a beginner. He said you generally have to spend much more to get this type of quality. I would call that a great value.

I bought this rod for a trip to Wyoming and South Dakota and could not have been more pleased. I have fished with dozens of different fly rods over the years and I this one performed as well as any of the more expensive rods. It has a great feel and casts well in calm and windy conditions. Anyone looking for a great backup rod or even a primary rod should consider this combo.

After using an old fiberglass fly rod of my fathers, I decided to purchase one for myself. After looking around I went with LL Bean because of the customer service and satisfaction guarantee. I ordered a 9' 6 wt. outfit and had issues with the reel fitting to the reel seat. LL Bean shipped another outfit to me and said to keep using the one I had until the new one arrived. The new outfit fit perfectly and LLB took care of all shipping charges associated with the exchange! This outfit has greatly improved my casting abilities and looks and performs fantastically. My only disappointment is that the fly line is a lower quality than I would expect for such a nice outfit and I believe hinders the performance of the outfit ever so slightly (love the color of the fly line though, great for keeping an eye on it). Even with the line issue, I learned to double haul with this outfit which I could never achieve with the old fiberglass rod. Case and reel bag is a nice bonus.

I bought the #5, 9' rod in the early spring and have used it a lot since. It's a good rod and a very good reel. The rod is not as snappy or flexible as others I have but I can throw the line well and far. The reel is terrific. It's smooth and light. The outfit has good line and leader. You will be able to go fishing as soon as you get it.
