Rated 2 out of 5 by thirdcoasters Wool, durable, but SHORT
I've had this base for over a year now, and it's held up incredibly well with heavy use - mountaineering, snowboarding, backpacking, biking, running. It's just way too short. I can barely tuck it in, and it frequently pulls out. The thumb loops are uncomfortable - the sleeves are stretched too tight when I put them on. Always air dried, but it's been like this since purchase and I thought I could live with it. I wear an XL, guess I should've bought an XLT (I've never worn an XLT anything in my life). In general I would expect a base to have a longer fit to begin.

I have finally found a shirt that I can run in when the temps drop below 32. It's a heavy enough base layer that it pairs perfectly with my Brooks LSD running vest for all my winter running weather needs.
This is a heavy base layer, so I wouldn't wear this with a jacket. I know I would overheat quickly. Maybe the cresta lightweight base layer would work with a jacket, but it doesn't come in tall sizes.
While this base layer keeps me warm, it does not block wind at all. That's where a vest over the shirt or a technical long sleeve under the shirt helps out.
What I love about this shirt: available in tall, sleeves run long, keeps me warm without overheating.
I'm 6'3, 220 and ordered a L Tall. Fits snug, not tight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by ATHIKERRICK Almost Perfect
This mid weight base layer is one of my favorites for backpacking and bikepacking. Good base layer in cool to colder temps or can be worn as 2nd layer. Overall great construction, warm, fast drying, and a good backcountry sleep layer on really cold nights. My only complaint is that I don't care for the thumbholes. I understand their function (keeps sleeves in place/wrists covered) but I've never been a fan of thumbholes. I wish LL Bean could offer them with or without. Great base layer at a fair price as I've seen other companies selling a comparative top at $100 or more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by birdiegal really fine shirt/sweater
I bought this for my husband just before Christmas. He has worn it many times already, and loves it.
We have machine washed, but have not risked machine drying, so I cannot testify to that. To be on the safe side and avoid shrinking, we line dry it.
We both favor natural fibers over even the best synthetics. Hubby wears this over an LLB silk undershirt, and he is very comfortable, never clammy.
The color blocking and raglan sleeves make it very flattering as well as comfortable. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by WisSnowOwl Good Product and Great Deal
Just as the title says. I've had this one entire year and couldn't be happier with it. I like to use this as an outer base layer during deep cold, over a pair of lighter wool base layers. The combination is hard to beat. Plus it's 100% wool so it performs better and looks better. Wish they made it in other solid colors so I could use it as a regular shirt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LuckyGlobal Best thermal top I've ever had
I'm not usually a fan of thermals; thought they really didn't do much. My wife and I were going on a Christmas vacation through Switzerland, so warmth was paramount.
Half way through this trip. I just had to give a status report. By far, extremely happy with this product. It was itchy the first day, but has been great since then. It's seemless, soft and keeps your body at an even temperature; never too warm or even slightly cold. Been in temperatures ranging from 49 to 26 under a sweater and a medium coat.
Water spilled on my arm while we were eating at a restaurant and my sleeves were exposed. The area never really absorbed any of the water. Furthermore, the portion of the fabric that was slightly damp dried and was warm in what felt like minutes.
Also, I am not ashamed to say I wore this pair for 5 days straight and there was no odor at all as expected. I will say that fit is a bit different. After reading most the reviews on this site I went with a medium for more of a fitted feel. I'm 5'10" and 198 lbs. If you're on the fence in regards to buy or not to buy, I strongly encourage you to buy.
As a whole I can say I'm happier than hog in the mud with my base layer and will be buying more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by neworleans too loose and bad seam
I purchased this to wear under a cycling jersey for winter cycling. Even though I ordered a size smaller than I normally would it was very loose and not suitable for wearing under a tight-fitting cycling jersey. It might be ok under a loose shirt.
Also, one of the arm seams was bad, leaving a gap.
Of course, L.L.Bean refunded me the full price, with no shipping charges. That's why I shop here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by notsofat Feels great
I have several base layer crew shirts, both LLB and others. But this merino wool gives the best feel against my skin, and while it keeps me warm in raw outdoor temps, it is not too hot to wear indoors.
After a day's wear it doesn't have any odor.
I will buy more as gifts...

I bought this in a medium for my brother. It fits true to size, is soft and warm. He's worn it several times and it appears to have washed nicely. Such a great price for a merino wool base layer - you simply can't go wrong!

Rated 4 out of 5 by GeorgianGirl nice soft warm shirt
Just bought this for my husband and it's a very nice shirt - you just can't beat merino wool for softness, helping you maintain your body temperature in many kinds of weather, washability and non-stinkability! The green is a nice deep rich green. The raglan style sleeves make for ease of movement and layering.
2 reasons why we didn't rate this a 5 - the stitching around the neck is a little itchy but haven't washed the shirt yet.
Also the shirt runs a tiny bit short so I think if you have a long torso, regardless of height, you might want to order a tall.
My husband looks very nice in this shirt and I'm glad that I bought it. Will get another.
