I've worn the original Katahdin Iron Works Boots for several years. They're great shoes and like them very much, but I found that the leather across the toe would fail at the stitching. I tried this waterproof version because they have a solid toe.
The foot portion of the boot is immediately comfortable. However, the uppers have a design flaw in that the lacing studs and tongue are too broad and the interior row lines up with the inside ankle-bone. I fussed with them for a week trying to get a lacing configuration that wouldn't be painful, but all I got was very sore ankles. The tongue should be flatter or more narrow, and the laces should come closer together so that they rest on the front of the foot. They'll then protect the ankle bone instead of riding on top of it. Other reviewers have noted the same thing and I think a redesign is necessary. I don't wish to be harsh, but it seems like a pretty basic element of shoe design.

I'm very pleased with my first pair of American made boots in years. I'd been in a popular brand of Swiss made boots for decades, but once production moved to another country they just didn't seem stand up.
These boots are stiff at first and will require breaking in before they're truly comfortable. At first they felt tight around the ankle, but lacing them a little looser took care of that. Once broken in, they are a great all day boot. I frequently work in the forest and on slopes and these provide secure footing and great ankle support. I've been suffering from lower back and Achilles tendon pain recently and since I've started wearing these boots both have greatly diminished. Could it be the boots?
I look forward to years with these boots and love the guarantee!

At an age now when my foot is wider than it had been heretofore, I wear women's 8-wide for nice occasions and men's shoes, size 6.5 regular, for daily use and long walks.
Reading the reviews of these Katahdin boots, which said they ran big, I worried that size 7, Bean's smallest men's size, would be too long. On the contrary! On the other hand, they're so stout and sturdy that they didn't give a bit in width, and so L.L. Bean very kindly took back the 7-M and sent me the men's 7-EE, which are great, roomy enough for wool socks.
I hope to brave New York City snows for many a year in them -- also Maine's when I get up there! And I'll bet they're nice for autumn wanderings too, anywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NGates Just what I expected them to be. Perfect.
I received my pair of these Katahdin boots from Chippewa boots via LL Bean. Theyre exactly what I hoped they would be.
Im a Construction Manager and I needed a boot that would be able to get around the jobsites easily as well as still look good for meetings with clients and architects. Theyre just that. Theyre tough enough to withstand the day to day walking through the construction sites and still good looking enough to wear to important meetings. They're extremely well constructed and the sole is well padded and comfortable. The exterior is a super tough leather and will take a little time to break in but Im looking forward to it when they do finally get broken in well. Thanks again for delivering a great product.

The boots were just returned. Boots this heavy need more padding around the ankles. After just 30 minutes of wear, my ankles were bruised. After trying extra padding, improvised and inserted, I could not improve the boot and prevent painful bruising. Two weeks of effort and break-in attempt offered no improvement.
The quality of the leather and last are excellent so I'm very disappointed my feet and this pair of boots are not a good FIT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by onehappygirl great fit, very comfortable, look good
I bought these for my son who takes a size 14 shoe and he says they fit like a glove and are "the most comfortable boots I've ever had". The 1 inch heel makes him even taller than his 6'4"' but he believes this helps with chronic low back pain because it must alter his posture a little. Other boots he has had wore down and rubbed his feet rather quickly but these haven't at all.

True to the description, these are great work boots. Waterproof and comfortable though, like most leather boots, they need to be broken in. Not really insulated but, because of the liner, your feet can breathe and stay dry. They work well in 30-60 minute walks in 4" of snow or when shoveling it. Would definitely buy them again but don't expect to have to.

Rated 3 out of 5 by upstatenysarah Leather looks worn, not well made
The boots caused pain from rubbing on the inside ankle bones. This was due to a bulging seam where the tongue of the boot attached to the upper. No matter how much my father wore them, he could not overcome the discomfort and therefore had to cut the excess leather of the tongue and remove some of it. The shoe design is not very intelligent, but the quality over all is ok. But be warned, when you open your brand new shoes it almost looks like they were already worn by someone because the leather is all scuffed up. This is fine if you were these as work shoes, but I was a little disappointed considering the fact that this was a gift for my father and his expectations were not met.

I was up in the air about purchasing these boots, mainly out of the concern of pricing. $225 is more than I spend on shoes normally, but figuring if they weren't exactly what I was looking for, I could always return them - no questions asked. These boots are absolutely incredible. They fit like a glove and offer protection against the elements. We just had a snowstorm last night into this morning, dumped 6 inches of snow. I wore my boots to work, looking for better traction and something that won't soak my feet. Boom! These fit the bill perfectly. Love them. Buy them. Tell your wife the doctor made you if you must.
