Course Description

A great course for individuals new to navigating with a compass or orienteering enthusiasts looking to fine-tune their skills, our map and compass course will show you the techniques and tools for navigating your way through the wilderness.

You'll start with a detailed look at the components of a topographical map. We will practice with a map of the local area. Our experts will explain the importance of contour and meridian lines for navigation, and how to read a map legend to locate landmarks.

Then you'll practice how to take and follow bearings in the field, learning the best methods for plotting distances and bearings for specific waypoints and landmarks. You'll also learn how to triangulate and biangulate to find your position.

Your instructor will also discuss declination (magnetic north vs. true north), and its importance in navigating with a map and compass. You'll also learn how to download online topographical maps from the U.S. Geological Service.

This is a very hands-on skills-based course, so you should be prepared to participate in a good deal of field exercises.

All necessary navigation aids (map & compass) are provided.

L.L.Bean does not usually cancel events due to inclement weather. However, we reserve the right to cancel an event at any time due to severe weather, low enrollment or other concerns. If L.L.Bean cancels your event, you will receive a full refund for the cost of your reservation.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to weather conditions and your level of exertion.
