Course Description

Come meet new friends, explore new waterways and gain confidence in your outdoor skills – all while having lots of fun in Maine's amazing north woods.

A great first trip for novice teen adventurers, this five-day, four-night trip includes a bit of everything: team building, trip planning, outdoor exploration, canoeing and leadership skills – plus the small group size means plenty of personalized instruction from our L.L.Bean guides, trusted leaders in outdoor adventures for over 40 years.

This exciting adventure begins at our gorgeous Paddling Center, right here in Freeport, Maine. After introductions and team building exercises, we'll head to the water to practice paddling skills. Then, we'll return to the Paddling Center to enjoy our first camp meal together and set up our tents for the night. The next morning, we'll shuttle together by van to the Penobscot River put-in to continue the outdoor fun. There we'll head out in canoes for four days of exploring the Upper West Branch, a remote and beautiful stretch of the Penobscot River. Famous for its serene waters, stunning views of Mount Katahdin and incredible wildlife sightings, this is also the waterway that author Henry David Thoreau once paddled. At night, we'll camp on the quiet shores and enjoy campfire meals prepared by you and your guides.

Along the way, our guides will teach you all the skills needed for this wilderness adventure, such as paddling strokes and maneuvers, campsite cooking, navigation, canoe packing, teamwork and camp setup and cleanup. Come for a weeklong adventure, learn skills and make memories for a lifetime.

This trip starts and ends at the L.L.Bean Paddling Center in Freeport, Maine.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in mulitple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.
