Course Description

Our four-hour off-trail navigation session is perfect for scouts, skiers, guides, hikers, backpackers and any outdoor enthusiast who wants increased confidence to safely navigate through the wilderness.

Building on the fundamentals from our introductory course Intro to Map and Compass, this training offers more hands-on field exercises to give you the confidence you need to get where you want to go. Led by expert instructors, the small group will start indoors and then quickly head to the field to reinforce land navigation skills. Practicing with a compass and a local topographic map, our guides will cover plotting distance, time and pacing, how to find and follow a bearing and how to convert between true and magnetic bearings. You'll learn the tricks and techniques to help you effectively navigate in a variety of situations and terrain. These skills are vital for anyone who is planning on exploring off trail.

All necessary navigation aids (maps and compass) are provided.

Our trips and tours are led by experienced guides who are passionate about the great outdoors and excited to share a new adventure with you. Please join us today.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.
