Course Description

Perfect for kayakers who want to learn how to read nautical charts, become safer paddlers and confidently explore more ocean environments.

This one-day course includes classroom time followed by an on-water navigation session to help you take your navigation skills to the next level. During the classroom lessons, kayakers will learn the Navigational Rules of the Road, plus all aspects of chart reading (colors, latitude, longitude, buoys and lights), set and drift, dead reckoning, aiming off and how to triangulate your position. Students will also learn detailed tabletop trip planning as well as on-water deck-top navigation and course adjustment. In this course, kayakers will also gain a full understanding of tide/current logs, effects of fog, wind, waves, and boat traffic.

During the on-water lesson, students will test their skills by paddling a plotted route using deck-top navigation tools, conditions permitting.

If you have never taken a formal kayaking class, please see one of our Introduction to Sea Kayaking courses.

L.L.Bean does not usually cancel events due to inclement weather. However, we reserve the right to cancel an event at any time due to severe weather, low enrollment or other concerns. If L.L.Bean cancels your event, you will receive a full refund for the cost of your reservation.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.

?Please call ahead if you plan to use your own equipment as it must pass inspection by L.L.Bean staff before use. If it's deemed unsuitable, we will provide you with the necessary equipment.
