Course Description

This course is our Registered Maine Recreational Guide Preparation Course, with additional time for a fishing addendum. Our curriculum will help you enhance your outdoor leadership and safety skills, plus prepare you for the Maine State Guide exam and obtaining your Registered Maine Fishing Guide's license. Over two weekends, you'll learn a range of technical guiding skills needed to safely lead day and overnight fishing trips in the Maine woods and on inland waterways.

During the six days, Registered Maine Guides will share their wisdom and guiding experiences. Along with our Registered Maine Recreational Guide Preparation Course participants, you'll learn the foundational concepts of guiding and all the necessary outdoor skills you'll need for safely leading clients in the Maine woods. They'll review the various laws governing the outdoors and how to prepare for canoeing, hiking and winter camping trips. Participants will practice lost-person scenarios, and be trained in search-and-rescue techniques – essential for responsible guides. You'll also learn map skills, how to effectively navigate with a compass and GPS, reading the weather, trip-planning tips, camp cooking and Leave No Trace principles.

In addition to the Recreational Guide topics above, participants will receive a half-day of training focused on fishing, such as fishing techniques, laws, etiquette, equipment, bag limits, fish habitat, aquatic vegetation and wildlife facts. Even if you're not planning to be a guide, our course is simply the best way to enhance your outdoor skills and knowledge.

This six-day course is offered Friday night and all-day Saturday and Sunday over two weekends. The half-day fishing segment will take place on the second Friday, from mid-morning to 5:00 p.m. Lunch is included on the day of the cooking segment. Note: Participation does not guarantee passing the State Fishing Guide Exam. The exam is not part of this course.

All necessary fishing and paddling equipment is provided.

L.L.Bean does not usually cancel events due to inclement weather. However, we reserve the right to cancel an event at any time due to severe weather, low enrollment or other concerns. If L.L.Bean cancels your event, you will receive a full refund for the cost of your reservation.

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.

†Please call ahead if you plan to use your own equipment as it must pass inspection by L.L.Bean staff before use. If it's deemed unsuitable, we will provide you with the necessary equipment.
