How to Choose Hiking Footwear

Different Boots for Different Hikes

For short day hikes in a dry climate on well-established terrain, trail shoes like our ventilated Pathfinder Hikers combine athletic-shoe design with the support of hiking boots. If you expect to encounter steeper inclines and muddy paths, you'll need sturdier waterproof boots like our Trail Model Hikers, which are available in a mid-cut style that provides more support.

For longer day hikes or multiday hikes, you'll need to be prepared for changing weather and more difficult and varied trail conditions, with boots that feature a higher cut and stiff sole for extra ankle support and protection. Our Mountain Tread Hikers and new Katahdin Hikers – both constructed with breathable and waterproof Gore-Tex® fabric – are designed to keep your feet dry and comfortable while providing good traction and helping to support a fully loaded pack.

For longer backpacking and mountaineering hikes, you'll want very rugged boots that will perform in any weather and on any terrain. Our Gore-Tex Cresta Hikers have been our most popular backpacking boots for years, and they consistently receive high praise from avid hikers for their support, stability and protection. These top-of-the-line boots are comfortable right out of the box, and the premium Italian leather and rugged Vibram outsoles will stand up to even the most trying conditions.

Finding the Right Fit

Boots should feel snug but comfortable, so you can still wiggle your toes. They shouldn't pinch, constrict circulation or create any painful pressure points. Try walking down an incline with the boots on, and make sure your feet don't slide forward. We suggest wearing your boots with polyester blend or heavy-weave wool socks, like our CoolMax All Sport Socks or Cresta Hiking Socks, because regular cotton socks will absorb moisture and cause blisters.

Like everything we sell, our boots are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you have any concerns about the fit or performance of your boots at any time, our customer service team will be happy to help you make an exchange for the perfect pair.

Care and Maintenance

It's important to break in your new boots by wearing them on a few short hikes. Your boots will last longer if you clean them regularly, paying special attention to any spots where there may be damage to the fabric, leather or waterproofing – especially around the seams. Occasional waterproofing is critical to make sure your boots continue to keep water out.
