This coat is very, very warm, and seems like it would be really waterproof. I like how high it zips and the hood coverage, but. . . it is a bit heavy and bulky, and has a pretty unflattering fit. The strangest thing, as another reviewer mentioned, is that you can tighten the fit around the middle. However you have to pull a cord inside the two front pockets, which are placed too high, so it just has this weird-looking bulge in the front of the jacket. I'm not sure if I'll keep it because of this, which is disappointing.

Like many other reviewers, I replaced my older version Rugged Ridge Parka with this Parka and was not thrilled with the way the coat runs....the cut runs overall on the small and short side, especially with the sleeves. The jacket is shorter too, which I like though, as I felt the older version was too long! Thankfully the sleeves have the cuff inserts to give you a little "extension" feel.I ordered a size S and M and am still debating to keep the M or not...as the S is definitely too small and short and the M is still a little snug in the shoulder area. I am 5'5" and 116 lbs only, and I know the L will be too big! Still seems like a very nice jacket.

I chose carefully before I purchased this one in elderberry. I wanted something that could withstand our heavy rain and be warm. Here is what I found. This parka is lovely, nice color, well-made, seemed to be perfect for colder days here in Southeast Alaska. Once I tried it on, I was so disappointed. It felt heavy and stiff. I did not like the cinches for the waist. They were just odd in their own zippered compartments with some sort of lining-like cloth attached that did I do not know what. The hood was small in terms of full coverage of my head and my head is not especially large. It would not work well for our heavy downpours here, I thought. Most of all, it was not flattering at all. I found the other color along the seams to widen my torso in appearance, not flattering. My frame is medium with a little too much weight in my middle but not an apple. I am 5'4". I sent it back. How disappointing.

I'm not surprised to see that most of these fine coats are sold. I thought it would be hard parting with my old tired dog chewed camo coat but a few days in sub zero weather with this beauty made the decision a breeze.
The best aspects of this coat are the light weight making moving easier and the tailored fit which keeps in the body warmth. Thank you Bean for making these long winters more than an endurance.

I love this coat--been looking for a Winter Horseback Riding coat that was waterproof, windproof, lightweight, not bulky, and WARM!! This is it. If anything, walking the dogs (which includes a horse and donkey) in >25 degree weather it's almost too warm. I wear it with ONLY a long sleeve T-shirt and am toasty. The fleece neck collar is enough to keep out cold, and the hood worked well to keep my head and face protected and warm in windchills last week >10 below zero--without wearing a hat! I had no trouble with the zipper. Although it's a bit unusual the way the drawcord at the waist cinches from inside the pocket, but it's still sufficient to slimline the waist somewhat. I'm 5'6" and 145 Lbs.--the medium would have been perfect for walking and town wear, etc. but I returned it and got a large to have a little extra sleeve length (I have long arms). It's a bit big around the middle, but for riding I can unzip the lower half and comfortably cover my backside. Love the teal color! I had not even considered this jacket because of the price, but then caught it on sale! Compared to other brands in sport stores, this is a Super Buy at any price. I thought in the beginning that I would recommend a design change to having it gusseted in the back like a true riding jacket, but it's not really necessary...I write this for all those horsey folks who are looking for a winter coat around the barn, farm and for riding and extend that to all other outdoor hikers, etc. It's plenty long, plenty warm, and plenty cute! The little bit of fabric 'noise' and stiffness is easy to live with--warm, dry and not bulky override all other 'issues'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ESEH Warm comfortable and great in the wind
This coat is very warm and stops wind well. I love how well the hood adjusts and the many pockets. It has worked well in subzero weather and is not too bulky. I am so glad I got it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BeanCust72 warm and comfy!
I love this jacket. It has kept me warm in below 0 wind chill, moisture beads up and runs off, and best of all, I can actually raise my arms without the jacket riding up or pulling across my back. And the sleeves are long enough to keep my wrists covered. The fit is roomy enough for a sweatshirt but is fine without layers, too. Yes, the zipper can be tricky but that's pretty much the case with all 2-way zips - just take your time.
It's pretty much perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WAtraveler Warm; Keeps the wind out
I purchased the rugged ridge jacket in the purple/violet color - on sale. I had a rugged ridge a few years ago when the styling was a bit different, but the current sale jacket has good features and works well for cold blustery days. I live in the pacific northwest and purchased this jacket for winter on the Oregon coast - daytime temps in the 30's and 40's with significant wind. While the styling is somewhat boxy and very parka looking, the warmth factor is great and the wind stays out. The hood is OK, not the best, but does work. I'd consider five stars if the Velcro on the storm flap were replaced by snaps like on the Baxter State parka. The waistline cinch feature is awkward and not well placed, so I just let the jacket be boxy. This jacket is great outdoor wear, not very stylish for "in town," but the price is right for a quality winter jacket. I'm 5'6" and the length pretty much covers the "bum." as in the online Bean photos. The violet is a pretty color - not too bright, and looks good with dark denim or black. Pockets were sufficient for collecting shells!

Rated 3 out of 5 by mmed Not sure about keeping it
I purchased the Rugged Ridge Parka version that was on sale, which may be an older version, or at least an older color choice. I love the purple color, but I'm disappointed in the fit. The parka is shorter than I would like, reaching the top of the thigh. The sleeves are barely long enough. I'm 5'5", 125 lbs, and bought a Medium. I think the Large would be too big for me. The parka is also bulkier than I expected. I'm trying to replace a parka that is too bulky to be comfortable driving and in stores. I haven't decided if I will keep it or continue the search.
