This is a great watch. I have had it for over a year now, and after wearing it almost everyday, I've never had a problem with it. It fits the wrist well, it's easy to read, and the leather band is durable and comfortable. It has not lost or gained a second since I've owned it. I wear it to work, out in the yard, and even waterskiing and it hasn't missed a beat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by pcsqueen Gold Plated: Cheap Looking Echo of a Great Watch
My husband's gold plated LL Bean Field Watch gave up the ghost a few months ago after many years of use and abuse.
His old one was gold with a dark face and a brown leather band (replacement, but almost identical to the original).
DH loved his Field Watch and, when it died, was heartily disappointed to discover that it was not possible to order an exact replacement. He, therefore, settled for the current, gold plated model.
To say that we were both dismayed when the watch arrived is a gross understatement.
The thing looks cheap, like something you'd buy for $25 (or less) at your local, discount, big box store. The gold plating is bright yellow, not a deep color that you'd expect. The leather band is of poor quality; it has a plastic feel instead of the softness of proper leather. Last, the bright white face just doesn't work - especially against that bright yellow-gold.
The watch was returned to Bean for a refund. I hope that Bean brings back the old version of the much-loved gold field watch (dark face, non-cheesy-looking gold, nice leather band). For now, however, DH will have to live without his favorite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by pmcjr My all time favorite watch
I have worn an LL Bean Field watch for over 25 years. They are without a doubt the most reliable and accurate watches I have ever owned. The current model is larger than the previous models and, at first, I wasn't sure I'd like it. After wearing it for some time now, I prefer the new size. It has a rugged feel to it, but, to me, is not bulky as some other reviewers have said. I have the dark blue face which makes it much easier for me to see the hands. This one may never wear out, but if it does I'll get another one for sure.

I purchased my first gold Field Watch over 20 years ago. I was afraid it would "wear out" so I purchased a back up. The first one is still going strong without a single repair in all these years...and the back up one is still in my dresser drawer! This is a treasure! Only wish they still made the original watch band set (3) that came with these watches!

Purchased the watch on May 27, 2015. I am very happy with its functions and attractive appearance. I did find the nice looking black leather band that came with it was not able to keep the watch centered on my wrist. I purchased from a larger black band size 18L and now all is fine. The substitute band cost me $20 and it was obtained from a local jeweler.

by KSU1988 Men's Classic Field Watch, Stainless Steel
My classic field watch from 2004 stopped working around the 4th battery change. LLB sent a replacement in 2 days and I've been happy with it so far. It has gained about 5 seconds in 6 weeks.
It is larger all around especially in thickness but I didn't measure the old one before sending it in. Based on a case diameter of 36mm it would fall into the average size category for a men's watch. I have a very small wrist btw 6.75" and 7" for a 5'11'' 180 lb male and I wouldn't consider the watch to be overly large. Many of the new watches take up the entire width of the wrist.
I do feel the hour/minute hands could be wider however I can still see them with my 49 yo eyes. I replaced the leather strap with a nylon one that was included with the 2004 model that I had never used. It fit great but was not easy popping out the spring bars.
Here are my measured dimensions for this watch and I have included a picture of the 2004 model:
Case thickness: 9mm
Case Diameter(8 to 2): 36mm
Case Diameter w/crown: 40mm
Very Top to Very Bottom: 45mm
Band Widest Point: 17mm
Band Tapers to: 15mm

I have an L. L. Bean Field Watch that I bought in the 1990s which is somewhat the worse for wear, and I decided that it was time to replace it. None of the current models are identical, but this one had the most similar design, so I bought one.
I was disappointed to find that it is much bulkier and heavier than the old design. The diameter is the same, but it seems to be between 2 and 3 mm thicker. The new watch weighs 45 grams as against the 33 of the old model--an increase of more than a third in weight.
I would not describe my old L. L. Bean Field Watch as either thin or light, but this new one is of a positively ungainly thickness and weight. On the basis of my brief experience with it (I am returning it for a refund), I would say that this is not a watch that you will wear easily on your wrist or fit easily under the cuff of your shirt. It is certainly solidly made: I can say that much for it.

I love this watch. I love doing business with LL Bean, The first field watch I owned was stolen when I left it out at work. The second one lasted two years or so, then stopped. I sent it back for repair and they replaced it! I sent it back this time for the battery change. Can't beat the price, can't beat the service. Don't pay more to have a more expensive job done by whatever high school kid is in the "batteries changed" kiosk at the mall. Stick with LLBean.

When I read the reviews I have to smile. This is the "Classic Field Watch" and has the protective ears for the stem and knob. The "Vintage Field Watch" does not have to protective ears. This is a mans watch and it is TOUGH. I've had one for 15 years, (3 as a matter of fact). The stainless with the black face is easy to see even at night. I don't think its too large for the average guy, depending on your taste. Get one and I guarantee LL Bean will stand behind it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by kjsfdjkdjfkj How to interpret the measurements posted by LLB
I have owned several LLB field watches and have had a gold model for probably 12 years. It proved to be too large, but I wear it at times even though the crown digs into my wrist. I love the accuracy and the classic design. It's just too large for everyday wear.
I ordered this latest one in stainless steel because I thought the measurements posted by LLB indicated it was smaller. It isn't.
The measurement in width of the watch face appears in the photo to be the measurement across the case including the stem and crown. It is actually the measurement across the case excluding the stem and crown (from the "10" to the "4").
My own measurements are that the case is 42 mm across, including stem and crown, and 10 mm thick. In my opinion this is a heavy watch for a guy with a larger than average wrist.
I wish LLB would bring back the smaller version of this watch. For a time they sold one with a French movement that is thinner, lighter, and smaller.
But if you don't mind the size and weight, this one is still a great choice.
