Thule Help

Thule racks and gear carriers attach either to the roof or the rear of your vehicle. If you’re unfamiliar with car racks, please see the descriptions below. Depending on your vehicle’s make, model and year, you may see several of these options when you use the Fit Guide.

Roof Racks
Thule Multipurpose Roof Racks create a base to attach specialized gear carriers to the roof of your vehicle. The Fit Guide will pre-fill a check box for required components. There are three basic roof-rack systems:

1. For vehicles with rain gutters and without a factory-installed rack.
Complete system requires:
(1) Rain Gutter Fleet
(2) Load Bars

2. For vehicles without rain gutters or a factory-installed rack.
Complete system requires:
(1) Aero Feet
(2) Load Bars
(3) Specific Fit Kits that match the shape of your roofline

3. For vehicles with a factory-installed roof rack, using attachments to create a Thule crossbar "base." Depending on your vehicle you’ll see Tracker II, Railing or Rapid Railing systems. Some of these systems require individual components, sold separately.

About Thule Component Sets
Most of the components in Thule roof rack systems are sold as sets. For example, in a system for vehicles without rain gutters, the Aero Foot Packs and Fit Kit attachments are sold as sets of four, Load Bars (crossbars) as a set of two, etc. The Fit Guide will present these component sets as a quantity of one (1) and pre-fill a check box for all required components.

Roof Gear Carriers
A wide variety of specialized carriers attach to the Thule base roof rack or factory-rack. They allow you to carry bikes, skis, snowboards, canoes and kayaks. Enclosed roof boxes and open baskets carry general cargo or luggage.

Rear-End Hitch-Mount Carriers
Hitch-mount carriers attach to a rear-end hitch receiver or ball-mount hitch that is securely attached to your vehicle’s frame, either as original equipment or as an add-on. Hitch class varies and will determine your vehicle’s capacity to carry or tow gear. You should confirm your hitch class before selecting a Thule hitch carrier.

Trunk-Mount Bike Carriers
These carriers attach to your vehicle’s trunk or hatchback with secure straps and clips.

Truck Bed Rider Bike Rack
This is a specialized carrier that allows you to attach bikes to your truck bed.

Kayak Carriers
To carry a kayak on Thule Roof Racks, you need carrier attachments for both front and rear Load Bars. Cinch straps are included to secure your boat to the rack. For carrying longer touring kayaks, Thule QuickDraw Tie-Downs for front and rear bumpers are recommended, and sold separately.

  • Thule Hull-a-Port and Kayak Stacker include front and rear Load Bar attachments.
  • Thule Hydro-Glide and RollerCoaster attach to the rear Load Bar. They must be used in combination with an H2GO Saddle, sold separately, for the front Load Bar
  • You may also use two sets of H2GO Saddles, and attach them to front and rear Load Bars.

Thule Locks
Thule Locks are recommended for additional security. Some carriers and factory-rack attachments have built-in locks. However, most require the separate purchase of Thule Lock Cylinders, sold in packs of two, four six, eight or ten. The Fit Guide will recommend a specific number of Lock Cylinders, depending on the rack system and carriers you select.
