A peregrine falcon sits on a hunting perch.

Located 11 miles north of Monterey at the confluence of the Salinas River and Monterey Bay, the Salinas River refuge protects the endangered California brown pelican, Smith's blue butterfly, peregrine falcons and the threatened Western snowy plover.

The refuge also provides nesting and feeding areas for waterfowl, shorebirds and other waterbirds.

The 367-acre refuge preserves diverse habitats such as beaches, dunes, grassland, river, lagoon and salt marsh.
