Glacier National Park in Montana is one of the nation's most rugged and wild regions, with more than 700 miles of hiking and horseback trails weaving through its 1.01 million acres.

The famous Going-To-The-Sun Road through the park's midsection provides spectacular views along the Continental Divide, western Flathead Valley and the eastern prairies.

Visitor centers, lodging, camping, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing, hiking and naturalist programs are available.

Glacier and the adjoining Canadian Waterton Lakes National Park together form the world's first International Peace Park, established in 1932.

This land of high mountains, deep valleys, alpine meadows, dense forests and prairie grasslands provides habitat for a vast array of plants and animals, who move freely across the international border.

An international elk herd summers at Glacier and migrates to the milder prairies of Waterton in winter. For years, Glacier had no wolves until a few animals from British Columbia traveled south and established a pack there.

Beginning July 1 and continuing through Labor Day, the park will offer a free, optional shuttle service across the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Interested visitors will be able to get on or off the shuttle at any of 16 stops along the road. The shuttles are not tours, instead they provide a transportation alternative.

Glacier National Park has two historic chalets constructed by the Great Northern Railway between 1912 and 1914. Sperry Chalet offers full hotel service. Granite Chalet is open as a hiker shelter.
