In this colorful and historic park, red canyons that once sheltered the Ancestral Puebloan people meet the lush green San Juan forest. Ten miles east of Cortez on Hwy. 160 are the incredible cliff dwellings and mesa-top structures of the early Mesa Verdeans. The national park covers more than 52,000 acres, including 8,100 acres of wilderness. Park rangers offer guided walking tours of the intricate dwellings. Camping, lodging, meals and picnicking are available at the park. Most facilities and services are open from April to mid-October. The nearby Chapin Mesa Museum and Spruce Tree House cliff dwelling are open all year. Photo credits in order: Photo by Don White, courtesy of National Park Service. |
