Hovenweep's unique towers may resemble European castles, but they are prehistoric ancestral Pueblo structures, built about the same time as the European medieval fortresses, about 1200 AD. The largest and most accessible of the ruins is the Square Tower unit. A two-mile, easy walking trail leads to these ruins. There is a 300-yard-long wheelchair-accessible trail from the Visitor Center to a canyon overlook at the Square Tower Unit. Dirt roads to five outlying ruins offer excellent biking opportunities at this 785-acre monument, which straddles the Utah-Colorado border. These roads are rough and may require high clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles. Roads are inaccessible when wet. Rangers offer evening programs during the summer and provide a variety of interpretive programs. The 30-site campground is open year-round.
