Choke Canyon State Park is a fishing and camping park whose two units, South Shore and Calliham, are located along the 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir. The reservoir supports a variety of bass and catfish, bluegill, carp, freshwater drum, and gar. Calliham offers a variety of camping options, although no sites have full hook-ups. Amenities include a sports complex with a gym, group halls for dining and recreation, and courts for tennis, shuffleboard, basketball, volleyball as well as a softball field. Calliham has a two-mile long nature/birding/hiking trail, a nature center, and a man-made fishing lake covers 75 acres. A boat launch and lighted fish cleaning station are provided at the South Shore unit, a day-use are where camping is not permitted. The American alligator makes its westernmost appearance at Choke Canyon. Dense thickets of mesquite and blackbush acacia support varied wildlife including javelina, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer. The elusive green jay and crested caracara - the Mexican eagle - are seen. Watching the many species of butterflies is also popular. Biking is permitted on roads in both units and on some trails, although bikers must yield to hikers. Hunting for a variety of animals is permitted in the Wildlife Management Area adjacent to the park. The Calliham Unit, consisting of about 1,100 acres, is located on Hwy. 72, 12 miles west of Three Rivers. The mailing address for both units is P.O. Box 2, Calliham, TX 78007. The South Shore Unit is located on Hwy. 72, 3.5 miles west of Three Rivers. Camping is not permitted at the South Shore Unit.
