Canoeists in a reflective moment at Bigelow Hollow State Park.

Located on Route 171 in Union, Bigelow Hollow State Park is a day-use site popular with anglers and hikers who use it as the gateway to the surrounding Nipmuck State Forest.

At 513 acres, Bigelow Hollow completely encompasses Bigelow Pond and offers access to the much larger Mashapaug Lake, renowned for its water quality. Both are stocked with trout, and Mashapaug has native pickerel and large- and smallmouth bass.

Boat launches and wheelchair-accessible fishing piers are provided. Gas engines are barred from Bigelow Pond.

The park is also a popular ice fishing destination.

The small trail system within the state park links hikers and mountain bikers with more than 30 miles of logging roads and trails in the 9,000-acre state forest.

Cat Rocks, whose 1,000-foot elevation offers fine scenic vistas, is a popular hiking destination. Two trails skirt the shoreline of Breakneck Pond. Backpack camping is allowed with a permit.

The trails are also used by cross-country skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers.

Archery hunting is permitted in both state park and forest and hunting with firearms in Nipmuck State Forest only.

A day-use fee is charged on summer holidays and weekends at the state park. Alcohol is banned from the state park.
