On some mornings, sunlight and mist create rainbows at Rainbow Falls. Water cascades into deep blue pools at Rainbow Falls. A lookout at Wailuku River State Park offers a view of the Boiling Pots. Wailuku River State Park, off Waianueue Avenue in Hilo, offers fascinating geologic and scenic features. From a lookout, waters can be seen roiling and bubbling over the Boiling Pots, a succession of big pools connected by underground cascades. This area is located at the end of Peepee Falls Drive. Rainbows sometimes form on misty mornings at 80-foot Rainbow Falls, on Rainbow Drive. Hawaiians call the falls "waianuenue," which means "rainbow seen in water." Hina, mother of the deity Maui, is said to have dwelled in a cave behind the cascade. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Hawaii Division of State Parks.
