Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area and Wilderness, covering 57,725 acres, offers a variety of natural and geologic features, as well as unsurpassed recreational opportunities. The trout fishing is excellent in these clear, cold waters. White-water rafting and kayaking are highly recommended, but the river can be reached only by horseback or hiking along one of four trails. The rapids range from Class I to Class IV and the scenery and wildlife viewing is excellent. The Gunnison Gorge area is located approximately 50 miles south of Grand Junction. Falcon Road, east off U.S. Hwy. 50, about 10 miles north of Montrose and just south of Olathe, provides access from the southwest. The maximum stay in the wilderness area is two nights.
