Designated a National Natural Landmark, Panola Mountain is a 100-acre monadnock similar to Stone Mountain, closer to Atlanta. What distinguishes Panola is that its ecology is largely intact. Rare plants of the Piedmont region still thrive here, and Panola is home to a multitude of wildlife, including beavers, otters, deer and birds of prey. This makes 1,700-acre Panola Mountain State Conservation Park, situated less than 20 miles from Atlanta, ideal for nature lovers. It has two freshwater lakes open daily for fishing. Visitors may participate in park programs or strike out solo on a three-mile trail system that includes interpretive signage. There is also a nature center. Guided weekend hikes dependent on staff availability, for groups of 5 to 25 with at least 24 hours notice. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Georgia Department of Natural Resources. |
