Tennessee's only national forest is known for its whitewater rivers.

The Cherokee National Forest in eastern Tennessee offers clear streams, tranquil woodlands and a variety of recreational activities.

The forest stretches from Chattanooga to Bristol along the North Carolina border. The 640,000-acre forest is the largest tract of public land in Tennessee. It lies in the heart of the southern Appalachian mountian range, one of the world's most diverse areas.

These mountains are home to more than 20,000 species of plants and animals.

The forest offers plenty of "elbow room" for hikers, campers and even families with a motor home. Thirty campgrounds are scattered throughout the forest and most are available without reservations.

There are 650 miles of hiking trails, including 170 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. There are trails for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling.

Hikers, horses, and mountain bikes are allowed on gated (closed) roads unless otherwise posted.

Visitors can also swim, bird watch, go whitewater rafting or kayaking, hunt, fish or enjoy many miles of scenic drives.

There are several watchable wildlife loops to show visitors the forest's many ecosystems. For example, the Chilhowee Watchable Wildlife Trail offers three different ecosystems, including a grassy opening, a white pine community, and a hardwood forest. These habitats provide a variety of food and shelter types for animals.

During spring and fall migration and summer breeding season, watch and listen for migratory birds like scarlet tanagers and warblers. During winter, listen for residents like golden-crowned kinglets, pine warblers and Carolina chickadees. Nature detectives might also see signs of deer and other animals that live in the area.

The forest is bisected by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are two forest districts north of the park and two districts south of the park.
