The sun sets spectacularly over Lake Superior and visitors to McLain State Park get a front-row seat. The park sits on the Keweenaw Peninsula and has two miles of sand beach on Superior, as well as frontage on Bear Lake. About four miles of foot paths run along the shores of both lakes. Windsurfing and beachcombing are popular activities, as is berry-picking and rock-hounding for agates. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers descend on the park in winter. Bicyclists must stay on park roads. The park has 103 modern campsites, a rustic cabin and six mini-cabins. To reach the park, from U.S. 41 in Hancock, take Hwy. M-203 nine miles north to the park entrance.
