A tropical sunset along the sandy beach at Hunting Island. The lighthouse on Hunting Island was built in 1875. Sea, sand and sky merge in subtle textures at Hunting Island. This popular park near historic Beaufort is a large, secluded barrier island with semitropical beauty and an abundance of wildlife. A variety of plants and animals can be seen throughout the park, which contains one of the state's best slash pine-palmetto forests. Bird watchers enjoy many viewing opportunities. While on the 5,000-acre park, enjoy beaches, forests, campgrounds and cabins and climb the 140-foot historic Hunting Island Lighthouse. The 1,120-foot pier provides access for fishing and crabbing. A visitor center offers interpretive programs. Photo credits in order: Photo courtesy of South Carolina State Parks. Photo courtesy of South Carolina State Parks.
