The Tuckahoe tract is one of the oldest preserves owned by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife. It covers 14,108 acres in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Its salt marsh along Great Egg Harbor Bay is excellent for birdwatching. Thousands of sandpipers, knots, dowitchers, curlews, willets, plovers, turnstones and yellowlegs feed and rest in the area. Geese and ducks winter at the salt marsh. Gulls, terns, skimmers, American bitterns, egrets, herons, yellow rail and loons migrate through. Salt- and freshwater fishing is excellent. The principal freshwater species include largemouth bass, pickerel, yellow perch and eel. Saltwater species include fluke, white perch, flounder and blue-claw crabs. If there is snow, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing are permitted. Call for conditions.
