The Grulla National Wildlife Refuge is located a few miles east of Arch, N.M., near the New Mexico and Texas state line. The refuge is administered by the Muleshoe refuge in Texas. The primary wildlife found on the refuge include lesser sandhill cranes and shorebirds, who stay there in large numbers when there is water in the lake and move elsewhere when it is dry, often for years at a time. The refuge contains 3,236 acres, two-thirds of which are salty lake bed. The remaining refuge region is grassland. A short trail leads from the parking area to an overlook. Visitors can hike throughout the refuge, but there are no developed trails or other facilities. Photo credits in order: Photo by Tom Smylie, courtesy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. |
