Preparations begin for Class II and III rapids just around the bend. Delta Lower Falls provide a moment of scenic reflection. Paddlers navigate north through the Amphitheater Mountains and the foothills of the Alaska Range. The Delta, one of Alaska's 26 National Wild and Scenic Rivers, is located in south-central Alaska, roughly 175 miles southeast of Fairbanks. The river flows north through the Alaska Range with a watershed of 160 miles of streams and 21 lakes. The scenery is spectacular with plenty of room for hiking, camping, canoeing and fishing. The Delta and Tangle Lakes offer rolling, hilly tundra with glacial features including moraines, eskers and kettles. The Upper Delta provides views of steep alluvial slopes, rock cliffs and spectacular exposed geology. Moose, caribou, bears and eagles are often found parading along the waters edge. More than 100 species of birds, including ptarmigans and waterfowl can also be viewed along this quiet, serene expanse. While much of the river is Class I and II, boaters should be prepared for Class II and III rapids through shallow and rocky stretches of the lower river. The Delta offers a remote experience. Careful planning is required and traveling in small groups is highly recommended. Boaters should contact the BLM Glennallen Field Office prior to an excursion.
