Nearly two miles of sand makes Horseneck one of the Bay State's most popular beaches.

The 600-acre reservation supports a variety of activities. A lifeguard watches over swimmers from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The fishing for striped bass, bluefish, scup and other species is outstanding.

There is a launch for shallow-draft boats on Gooseberry Neck, a part of the reservation connected to Horseneck by a causeway. Kayakers and canoeists also paddle in the marshlands behind the barrier beach.

Horseneck Beach's most compelling feature may be the sand itself. Thanks to the park's breezy location on Buzzards Bay, the dunes at Horseneck are in constant flux. Walkways protect the fragile vegetation that stabilizes the dunes.

Other plants include colorful rugosa roses and beach plums. Resident wildlife includes the endangered piping plover (whose nesting areas are roped off during breeding season), terns, killdeer and ospreys. A naturalist leads interpretive walks from mid-June through Labor Day.

Horseneck has 100 campsites for summertime use, including four for the mobility-impaired.

Too rocky for swimming, Gooseberry is nevertheless popular with anglers, strollers and hunters. World War II-era fortifications lend a note of historical interest.
