Located in the Denver metropolitan area, Cherry Creek is Colorado's most popular state park and offers an abundance of recreational opportunities. Water-skiers, boaters, paddlers and windsurfers flock to the 880-acre reservoir. Fishermen head out to Cherry Creek or seek quiet coves where they catch trout, walleye, bass, crappie, pike, carp and catfish. Swimmers take a dip from the sandy beach, which offers a view of the snow-capped Rockies. Solitude can be found on more than 12.5 miles of trails (nine miles paved) good for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding through wooded glades and grasslands. This unique urban oasis is also a habitat for more than 100 deer, as well as coyotes, pheasant, cottontail and jackrabbits. In winter, Cherry Creek is open for camping, ice fishing, ice skating and cross-country skiing. Cherry Creek has a 120-site campground, shooting range and model airplane field. Horse rental and boarding are available. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Colorado State Parks. |
