This popular day-use area, 13 miles from busy Route 1, is a good family beach and a haven for naturalists.

Reid boasts an interesting mix of coastal habitats. Swimmers and anglers have their pick of beaches. Two stretches, Half-Mile Beach and Mile Beach, face the chilly surf of the open Atlantic. Another fronts on a sheltered, shallow saltwater lagoon that children enjoy.

But there's more than beach. The four miles of trails include boardwalks across the sand dunes and wooded paths excellent for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Hikers and cyclists also use them, but mosquitoes are fierce in summer.

The birding is especially rich in winter, when water dwellers include black ducks, mallards, common mergansers, eiders, buffleheads and loons. In spring, the dune grass and wild roses are alive with fluttering and chirping. Anglers frequent Reid when the striped bass are running.

Amenities include bathhouses and snack bars at the Todd's Point and Griffith Head ends of Mile Beach.
