Water spills over the limestone outcroppings in the Hillsborough River. A suspension bridge crosses the Hillsborough River in the verdant park. Hillsborough River State Park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened to the public in 1938. This 3,383-acre park offers camping, picnicking, canoe rentals and seasonal swimming. There are more than eight miles of hiking trails that weave through hammocks of oaks, sabal palms, magnolias and hickories along the banks of the Hillsborough River. Fort Foster is also within the park. A living history program takes visitors back in time to observe fort personnel performing their duties as they might have in 1837. Hillsborough River State Park is located 12 miles north of Tampa or six miles south of Zephyrhills on U.S. 301. Photo credits in order: Courtesy of Florida State Parks.
